ReplyIt will never be the same without you! I can say in my two years as a freelancer for ALL of the Lehigh Valley Patches, yours was one that people knew what I was referring to when I'd ask them for their name for a photo caption.
It would go something like this ..."Can I please get your name and town where you live? I'm with Upper Saucon Patch. Have you heard of us?"
And 9 out of 10 times the response would be something like this ... "YES! We LOVE Upper Saucon Patch! Elizabeth is amazing! Where is she today?" It was as if they were disappointed to see me instead of you in the field!
You truly had a direct connection with your readers, and it was reflected in all of your work. You covered not only the hot breaking news, but made sure to keep a healthy balance of things like school awards, festivals, events like Santa's visit at the animal shelter, and Town Hall train exhibits.
Many of my favorite freelance gigs were with Upper Saucon Patch thanks to YOU. Thanks for the beautiful memories and the mountains of experience. Can't wait to see you in action at your next position!

ReplyMarcia, if you contact the Emmaus Fire Dept., they might have extras from the fundraiser that took place a couple of weekends ago. There were a LOT of coats that were donated! I'm sure they'd be happy to help in any way.

ReplyThat's kind of you, Missy. Patch is where my heart was, so it has been tough considering jobs that make me feel 'at home' the way I did when I was out on assignment. I'll miss it a lot! I appreciate you being such a loyal reader!

On the article Are you Part of the 'Elf on the Shelf' Craze?

ReplyHi Tracy! I'm sorry you found this to be so offensive. My goal wasn't to 'trash' the elf or Santa, but to simply discuss the 'elf craze' as it may be. Each year it seems to be increasing. I've seen some pretty funny pictures of my friends staging their elves in precarious positions. I have nothing against people doing that! It's just not for me. Maybe it's my general lack of creativity. ;)
I also saw a blog that flying around FB (that was also recently posted on Huffington Post) about this very topic.
http://www.peopleiwanttopunchinthethroat.com/2011/12/over-achieving-elf-on-shelf-mommies.htmAs I quoted in the column, "This is a cute concept and one that seems to have become very popular among young families. Who doesn’t want another technique to get the kids to behave?"
When I shared the link about 'lying,' it simply directs readers to another column I wrote a couple of years ago about my personal feelings about telling my children Santa comes to our house. Remember, this is an opinion column. I genuinely feel a bit guilty lying to them that a man in a red suit shows up at our door. That's just me.
I'm not judging others who do it, as clearly, it's a tradition for so many. And yes, we still do it, and yes, I still feel a bit guilty doing it (to some degree), but we welcome Santa just as warmly as the rest. Hope that clarifies things a bit for you! Merry Christmas! :)

So glad to see our younger generation involved with these serious issues. Here's a Patch column I wrote a couple of years ago regarding fracking in north central PA. To see it first-hand was heart-breaking. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks for sharing your concerns, Mia! Keep at it!
