On the article School Board Approves 2012-13 Budget with Tax Rate Hike

ReplyJust to clarify, the reporting was not erroneous. According to Merriam-Webster a "miscalculation" is "a wrong judgment". According to Oxford, "to estimate an amount, a figure, a measurement, etc. wrongly." And, according to the Free Dictionary, "To count or estimate incorrectly".
That said, the figure was corrected before the final vote. And while $45,000 is nothing to sneeze at, in the face of a $54 million budget, it's really not a lot.

ReplyRte. 412 is still closed due to the fire. Scanner reports estimate it MAY be reopened in about five more hours. However, it is possible Rte. 412 may not reopen until tomorrow morning. Best to still stay clear of the area.

On the article Poll: Changing Easton's Parking Hours

Reply@R.D. Frable: Actually, that's Sundays that is currently free for street parking. Though that is one of the things that is being discussed as possibly changing. But Saturdays are definitely active for metered street parking.
@Jerry Thomas: If the meter you parked at was red, it's a 'short-term' meter, and it won't go beyond a short limit which might well be 12 minutes. But there are also those meters that just don't 'like' some quarters too--I've met those meters too. The police say those smart meters count the quarters even when they're not properly registered. Though I don't know really how that does anyone any good, unless one wants to track someone down and likely spend the better part of an hour trying to recover a quarter or two.
And you're right, the current notice on the meters regarding time limits is fairly atrocious. Hoping that's going to be part of the 'better signage' I've heard our mayor say (rightly) we need.

ReplyThe thought behind having meters run until 8 p.m. is to have restaurant and bar patrons pay some revenue to the city, since the restaurants are some of the most successful businesses in town and nearby street parking can be at a premium during their prime times. In other words, to not have the full burden fall on retail customers and other day visitors.
(BTW, not saying this is right or wrong, only passing along what has been discussed at prior city council/parking meetings.) -
On the article Low Voter Turnout Reported Around Easton

I stand corrected on the matter of pay. However, having just gotten off the phone with Northampton County voter registration, it seems they do have trouble getting enough qualified people to run the polls. Also, the day starts at 6:30 a.m., and doesn't end until all the votes are counted, often 16 to 18 hours later. Do the math, and you'll find they aren't exactly paid a fortune.

For the primary yesterday, poll workers were instructed to ask voters for their ID though not enforce the new rule (since the law passed only about 6 weeks ago but only goes into effect 60 days after passage). This was considered a "soft roll out". So poll workers could ask, but voters were NOT required to present ID unless voting for the first time or voting in a new district/ward for the first time. (That has been on the books for years.)
The poll workers did nothing wrong by allowing those without ID to vote yesterday.
BTW, poll workers are volunteers and not paid anything (to my knowledge). Perhaps you would consider thanking them for their time, instead of demanding some be banned?

ReplyOne more group that is likely to be disenfranchised of their vote due to the new ID law:
Of the 61,000 Amish in Pa., 57,000 of them don't have the required ID they will need to vote in November. If they want to change that without compromising their faith, they will need to jump through additional legal hoops (created just for this new law) to get a valid non-photo ID.

ReplyFifth Ward polls (Koury Place) had only 48 voters just before 6 p.m. I would have been #49, only with no referendums on the ballot, as an independent, I wasn't eligible to vote in this primary. (This is only the second time since I turned 18 I haven't voted.)
Poll workers there said they are not looking forward to the general election, when photo IDs become mandatory. There are a lot (if not a majority) of voters in the 5th Ward that are elderly seniors, and they foresee this being a potential problem in November. Especially since they pretty much know everyone by sight and by name.
Very low turnout...Four poll workers, me, and no other voters in sight...Yes, it's a tiny polling district, perhaps the smallest in Easton, but...
