He is up to date on shots, neutered, microchipped and ready for a forever family. LAVENDER Lavender is a beautiful pitbull terrier mix (possibly with lab). She walks well on a leash and knows several basic commands, such as "sit," "down," "stay," "come," "leave it" and, well, the list goes on and on... Lavender is the whole package. Just come and see. Suicide by Hammer Ruled in Man's Bizarre Death

A Williams Township man died as a result of self-inflicted hammer blows to his head, officials have determined

Michael Muretta struggled for years with mental illness. His struggle reached a horrific end last August when the 47-year-old Williams Township man struck himself in the head with a hammer, causing fatal injuries. That was the conclusion reached by investigators looking into Muretta's death, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said Thursday. At a news conference at his office, Morganelli told reporters that Muretta's history --combined with physical evidence at his home and no evidence of anyone who wished him harm -- will lead the coroner to rule his death a suicide. It's not clear whether Murettta intended to kill himself. The hammer blows may have been a response to the symptoms of the schizophrenia Muretta suffered …

Note: January is Adopt A Senior Pet Month at the Center for Animal Health and Welfare in Williams Township. Adoption fees for senior cats and dogs will be waived throughout January. ACHILLES Achilles is a handsome, big-headed hunk of American pitbull terrier. He is new to the shelter, but is quickly becoming a favorite among those who meet him. He has decent leash manners, knows some basic commands, and loves to run and play in the yard. Achilles can get pretty excited when playing, so he would acclimate best to a home without anyone very young or very old in it. Come meet him yourself and see what you think! Editor's Note: In the wake of Superstorm Sandy the Center for Animal Health and Welfare in Williams Township is in need of donations. The center is also running a "9 Lives for $9" cat adoption program through Nov. 18. The adoption fee for all felines over nine months old is just $9 with an approved application. HUNNIE Sweetheart alert! Eight-year-old Hunnie was a stray from Bethlehem. A terrier mix, she is very sweet and her tail doesn't stop wagging. She has spent a few nights in the homes of a few volunteers, and she is very easy to manage -- she knows how to live in a home. County Animal Shelter: Towns Must Pay More

The Center for Animal Health and Welfare in Williams Township says it can't afford to be an 'open' shelter.

Starting next year, it could cost more for municipalities to drop off stray animals at the Center for Animal Health and Welfare. Citing "spiraling costs" and a rise in the number of animals coming to its Williams Township shelter, the center will now charge municipalities $150 per dropoff, and will only take animals if there is room. The center said it has been nearly at capacity in the past year, and often has had to turn animals away from communities that have contracts with it. "Furthermore, certain municipalities have actively or negligently sought loopholes to utilize our services without paying for them," the shelter wrote in its newsletter. "Ultimately, the Center was left with choosing between providing charity to animals or …

Editor's Note: In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the Center for Animal Health and Welfare is especially in need of donations. BIG PAPA Big Papa came to the center as a stray in the summer of 2012. Big Papa is up to date on shots, neutered, litter trained and microchipped. He is big, friendly, gorgeous and in need of a forever home. BUSTER WHITE Buster White had a home but his owner passed away. This 9-year-old fella is social and looking for a family to spend his senior years with. He doesn't mind other dogs or cats and is ready for a family now.
