The tax increase in Nazareth Area School District's budget, which the school board plans to approve on May 21, has been trimmed to 1.9 percent.
The Nazareth Area School District budget for 2012-2013 shrank a bit in the administration’s final budget proposal when it comes to a tax increase -- but not by much. The proposed property tax increase is reduced to 1.9 percent, a slight reduction from the 2 percent increase proposed in the preliminary budget, which the Nazareth School Board passed in January. Here are additional highlights of the budget proposal presented at Monday’s meeting of the school board: No teachers will be laid off or furloughed, but a total of 10 positions, including seven teachers, will not be filled following retirements or departures. The budget is balanced: No money will be taken from the district’s fund balance -- roughly equivalent to a personal checking …

Students from Nazareth Area Intermediate School won first, second and third place in a recent competition -- Keystone Kids Challenge -- involving digital story books.
The Nazareth Area School Board on Monday honored students and teachers from Nazareth Area Intermediate School for winning a recent competition involving digital story books -- or online book reports, essentially. The fifth-grade students swept first, second and third places in a competition called Keystone Kids Challenge, organized by the Intermediate Unit 20. The students, from several classes, created online presentations about novels they read. The presentations were then posted to the IU website. The winning students and teachers screened the presentation that won first place, “Sign of the Beaver,” for the school board and the public at Monday’s board meeting. Fifth-grader Haillee Banko-Young provided narration to go along with the …

Nazareth Area School District administrators will present their final budget proposal to the public on May 14.
There was no update on the proposed 2012-2013 district budget at Monday's meeting of the Nazareth Area School Board. Do not expect one at next week's meeting, either. The administration will present its next budget proposal at a committee meeting on April 24 -- the day after the next meeting of the district school board -- then make a formal presentation to the public at the school board meeting on May 14, district Superintendent Victor Lesky said on Monday. Final approval of the budget is scheduled for May 21, Lesky said. By law, the school board must approve the budget by June 30. It will be in effect from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. As it stands now, the $69.2 million budget calls for a 2 percent property tax increase, as well …

Nazareth Area School District is one of only seven school districts in the nation featured in the current issue of USA Business Review, superintendent says.
Nazareth Area School District is featured in the current issue of USA Business Review, a prominent online business publication. The feature describes how the district maintains a high standard of academic excellence, produces champion-level performances from students in a wide range of sports and activities, and provides alternative “green” energy via solar power, among other things. The article can be viewed online at: http://www.businessreviewusa.com/magazines/10514 (Note: you will need Adobe Flash Player downloaded - for free - on your computer to view the magazine) Nazareth was one of only seven school districts throughout the nation chosen to be profiled in the Web magazine, said Superintendent Victor Lesky, at Monday’s meeting of the…

Nazareth Area School District should save at least $48,000 by closing the high school's planetarium, which needs to be refurbished.
Nazareth Area School District will close the planetarium in the high school as part of the administration’s plan to reduce the deficit in the projected 2012-2013 district budget. Also, the union that represents the district’s custodial workers has submitted a proposal to the district, offering unspecified concessions to avoid possible layoffs in a very tight budget year. Closing the planetarium, which needs to be refurbished and would do away with an elective astronomy course, will allow the district to eliminate one teaching position in the science department at the high school, said Superintendent Victor Lesky at Monday’s meeting of the district school board. That will likely not necessitate a teacher layoff, though, according to Lesky…

Four teaching positions to be cut; not yet clear if that will mean furloughs or layoffs, superintendent says.
The specter of teacher furloughs hangs in the air, as Nazareth Area School District's 2012-2013 budget continues to take shape. “I don't think this is a year for employment guarantees,” is how board President Lorin Bradley summed up the situation, at Monday's meeting of the Nazareth Area School Board. Bradley's remarks came after Superintendent Victor Lesky presented the administration's latest budget proposal, which trims the proposed deficit in the $69.3 million budget to about $153,000. The savings of about $770,000 compared to the previous budget draft -- which was tweaked after-the-fact due to changes in state-mandated transportation costs, Lesky said -- come from a variety of areas. Some examples: The question remains whether …

Anyone with information regarding the incidents should immediately contact police and the school's principal.
Dr. Victor Lesky, the superintendent of Nazareth Area School District, sent an e-mail alert and recorded phone message to parents Thursday afternoon, telling them that several students have reported being approached by two men driving a van. The students said the men asked if they wanted candy. There have been several variations in the description of the van: The e-mail did not say what schools the students attended or how many students were approached. Lesky asks anyone with information regarding these incidents to contact police and the school's principal.

Staff layoffs are still on the table, but administrators and the school board are waiting to see how many teachers submit retirement letters by March 1; those positions may not be filled.
The latest word on the budget process in Nazareth Area School District: Something has to give, but the administration and school board will wait for more information to decide what. District Superintendent Victor Lesky, who gave a presentation on current and projected enrollment and staffing levels at Monday's meeting of the district school board, said the administration will pursue ways other than tapping the district's fund balance -- roughly equivalent to a savings account for a private individual -- to close a projected deficit in the district's proposed $69.2 million budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Lesky did not commit to specifics, noting that things could change between now and May, when the budget -- which includes a 2 …

One of two unions responds to superintendent's letter asking for a pay freeze.
One of two unions the Nazareth Area Board of Education plans to ask for a pay freeze to ease the district's financial woes has asked to sit down with district officials. Representatives from the local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents the district's custodians and other members of its support staff, replied to a letter from the school board to say they want to discuss the issue, according to Superintendent Victor Lesky. “They said they would like to sit down and talk about details,” Lesky said at Monday night's meeting. No one from the Nazareth Area Education Association, which represents the district's teachers, had responded to the letter as of Monday. The board had directed Lesky to send the letters…

Michael Woodland, who had not yet attended his first school board meeting, resigned due to personal reasons, Superintendent Victor Lesky said Monday night.
Michael Woodland, who was appointed to the Nazareth Area School Board on Jan. 5, has resigned from his seat. He had not yet attended his first school board meeting. Superintendent Victor Lesky made the announcement Monday night, surprising board members. Personal issues were among Woodland's reasons for handing in his resignation, Lesky said. Woodland also recently announced that Dan's Camera City, which he co-owns, will be opening a location in Lower Nazareth Township later this spring. Gary Brienza, the solicitor for Nazareth Area School District, said the board will need to appoint someone in 30 days, as required by state law. School board member Linda McDonald nominated Bethlehem attorney Robert Pinel, a Lower Nazareth resident who was…
