NAZARETH, PA -- A Nazareth Area Middle School teacher is accused of repeated sexual assaults of a student over the course of more than two years, court records said. The teacher, Shawn William Salevsky, 39, of Lower Macungie Township, was fired by the school district April 22. The incidents occurred between January 2011 and March 15 of this year, according to court records. According to several websites, Salevsky is a graduate of DeSales University who formerly taught at Holy Family School, also in Nazareth, and Allen High School in Allentown. He also has performed with the Civic Theatre of Allentown. He was committed to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail after being formally charged Friday afternoon before District Judge …

Personally, Avis, I think an "appropriate sentence" would be to lock him into a room with fathers of middle school students like myself, for 30 minutes. Then, after he got out of the hospital, lock him up for the rest of his life.   more ›

Local Officers Complete 3-Day Crash Investigation Training [Photos]

Due to a significant number of crashes in 2012—and two fatal accidents within 15 months—Upper Nazareth’s police department enrolled in a three-day vehicle collision investigation course.

Upper Nazareth Township police in 2012 responded to about 150 motor-vehicle accidents—everything from minor fender benders to traumatic fatal crashes.  Due to the volume of crashes—and two fatal accidents within 15 months—Upper Nazareth’s police department enrolled in a three-day course: Fundamentals of On-Scene Vehicle Collision Investigation. The introductory-level training, given by the Institute for Law Enforcement Education, is “designed to provide law enforcement officers with the awareness and skill necessary to gather and document the physical evidence at the collision scene,” according to a flier provided to Patch. And, hopefully, better prepares officers for the more chilling scenes, said Upper Nazareth Officer Mark Herman. “The …

Police: Man Stole (and Returned) Apple MacBook, Cash

A Lehigh County man was fired from his job at a repossession company in Upper Nazareth amid allegations he had stolen an Apple laptop and $535 in cash.

A Cetronia man was fired from his job at a repossession company in late October amid allegations he had stolen an Apple MacBook A1181 laptop as well as money the company kept in a coffee cup. The employee, Timothy A. Fegely, 22, returned the laptop and some of the money the same day he was fired from Upstate Recovery LLC on Gun Club Road, Upper Nazareth Township, court records say. But also that day, he was confronted with another allegation: He used a company credit card to pay the $141 bill on his cell phone that had been shut off. Fegely was fired on Oct. 28, a Sunday, by the Upstate Recovery manager. An arrest warrant was approved Nov. 21 and on Sunday night, he was arraigned and committed to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $20,…

Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Upper Nazareth Police Forge Good Relations

In the midst of police department merge and regionalization talks -- which, on occasion, have been heated -- an Upper Nazareth resident offers praise for a local officer.

Dear Editor: My wife and I had an interaction with the Upper Nazareth Police Department [Saturday] that I want to share with your readers. Like most everyone else in the area, I’ve been reading the papers about the police situation in Nazareth Borough and the potential merging of their force with ours in Upper Nazareth. There's been a lot of negative comments made about the whole situation and the local police officers themselves, but what I've read doesn't jibe with what I've experienced. We've had the opportunity to speak with the Upper Nazareth Police a handful of times and in one, the officers were friendly, professional and went out of their way to help. The Upper Nazareth officers perform their job exactly the way I remember the …

Supervisors Approve Studies to Limit Truck Traffic on Silver Crest

Upper Nazareth Township is working to update its ordinances for weight-restricted roads, which are currently not backed by engineering or traffic studies; Silver Crest Road will be the first to undergo studies.

After more than three months of discussion and no decisions on the issue of truck traffic, the Upper Nazareth Board of Supervisors finally agreed Wednesday night to pay for Silver Crest Road to undergo an engineering and traffic study. The move is a small step forward for the township, which is fighting for the right to enforce weight limit and "No Trucks Allowed" signs. According to Alan Siegfried, police chief of Upper Nazareth Township, a technicality stands in the way of his department enforcing weight limits on township roads. And so far it has caused the township to lose potential fine payments of more than $18,000. Is there a road -- or roads -- you think the township should consider? Tell us in the comments section. All weight-…

Police: Upper Nazareth Man Lied About Palmer Detective's Assault

Todd Hoadley, 42, of Upper Nazareth is accused of lying to police -- and forcing three other people to fib as well -- about a Palmer Township detective punching him twice in the face.

Authorities say an Upper Nazareth man’s claim he was punched in the face by a Palmer Township detective is a lie. And they say Todd Hoadley’s claim that his girlfriend, his daughter and his daughter’s friend witnessed the assault is also a lie. In fact, the girlfriend and the daughter’s friend recanted what they previously told police and said they didn’t see any assault. Hoadley, 42, also changed his story somewhat during a second interview. He still insisted he was assaulted but this time could not identify his assailant. He added that he was going to “stick to his story.” In a previous case, Hoadley admitted in Northampton County Court in April 2011 he threatened three girls who argued with his 13-year-old daughter, telling them he was …

Intoxicated Fort Bragg Soldier Accused of Assaulting Girlfriend

Eric Keith Fairman, 21, a soldier stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., and Nazareth alumnus, allegedly assaulted his girlfriend early Sunday in Upper Nazareth Township.

A U.S. Army soldier at Fort Bragg, N.C., was drunk when he hit his girlfriend in the face early Sunday outside a Fourth Street home in Upper Nazareth Township, court records say. The suspect, Eric Keith Fairman, 21, is a 2009 graduate of Nazareth Area High School. Fairman admitted to police during the weekend incident “he drank a lot this evening,” according to a criminal complaint filed by Upper Nazareth Officer David Gentile. Fairman’s girlfriend told police she and Fairman were at a concert in Philadelphia and had been dropped off by a friend in the Fourth Street neighborhood. The complaint does not give the girlfriend’s address. It says police found the couple in front of 146 Fourth St. The woman said she and Fairman “were walking …

It's crazy how people are so quick to take the woman's side in a story like this. The media portrays males to be the bad person in most cases, but never really looks at the whole picture. I heard about this night from multiple witnesses, and the story seems to have been stretched, or warped by the minds of people who care a less about getting the actual truth. Eric Fairman has been made out to …   more ›
