Today, Jan. 21, marks the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Although it is a federal holiday, many businesses throughout the Nazareth area will be open. Here is a listing of what's open and closed on MLK Jr. Day: Nazareth Borough, Upper Nazareth Township, Lower Nazareth Township and Bushkill Township offices: Open. Nazareth Area School District: Closed. Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity: Closed Garbage collection (East Penn Sanitation, Waste Management): Will take place. Post Offices: Closed. There will be no mail delivery. Banks: Have the option to open. Many will close. Northampton County Court of Common Pleas: Closed N.Y. Stock Exchange: Closed. Orders for the Rotary Club of Nazareth's annual citrus sale must be made by Tuesday, Nov. 27.
The Rotary Club of Nazareth is holding its annual citrus sale, taking orders for navel oranges and pink grapefruit shipped directly from Florida, according to a press release. Orders must be made by Tuesday, Nov. 27. Fruit can be picked up or will be delivered after Dec. 8. Proceeds from the sale will benefit several community organizations, including the Nazareth Y, The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity, the Nazareth Area Food Bank and the Moravian Historical Society. A forgotten case evacuates The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity Wednesday afternoon and shuts down two blocks in the borough for about two hours.
The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity -- and 300 feet surrounding the library -- was evacuated Wednesday when a suspicious package -- the result of a teen's "Dumpster diving" -- was found in the lobby. The possible threat was determined to be unfounded, and there were no injuries. According to Mike Rinker, the borough’s emergency management coordinator, the call came in around 3:30 p.m. for the package that he described as a very old case, complete with reinforced hinges. An incident investigation report states that the suspicious suitcase hadn’t been touched or moved for three hours after being placed in the library. An old oil furnace will be replaced at The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity thanks to a $10,000 grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund. Nazareth Borough applied for the grant, according to State Rep. You might say that Josh Berk -- who will take over as director of The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity today, Jan. 17 -- was destined to be a librarian. Berk’s parents both worked as librarians. His father, Jack Berk, was well-known as the longtime director of Bethlehem Area Public Library. The young Josh Berk, however, had other ideas. “I grew up loving books, but when I was a kid I wanted to be a baseball player, not a librarian,” Berk said in a phone interview last week with Patch. Even after it became clear Berk would not make the big leagues, he did not plan a career in the library world. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Drew University in 1998.
