Mayor Defends Controversial Television Decision

Fred Daugherty Jr. says the television in the Nazareth Borough Police Department headquarters is merely a representation and "masks the real issue."

In a document titled "TV; It's Not Just Entertainment Anymore," Nazareth Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr. has offered his insight into the Nazareth Borough Police Department television issue -- an issue that has been heatedly debated since a borough employee was instructed by the mayor to disconnect the cable on Jan. 20. For Daugherty, the television "is just a symbol of a much deeper and flawed system of providing police service to a borough." The mayor goes on to note -- in the document sent to Nazareth Patch -- that "the police officers do not see themselves as employees of Nazareth Borough, but rather as employees of an association and union which contracts with the borough for police services." Nazareth Patch has learned that Daugherty would …

Nazareth Police Chief to Get Officers, No Cable

Police Chief Thomas Trachta will be getting a few more part-time officers, a breaching ram and two ballistic shields, but the television in the department will remain without cable.

You ask and you shall receive -- sometimes. With Nazareth Borough Council's unanimous approval to the police chief's request, applications will be accepted for part-time police officers -- as soon as the borough's secretary advertises the available positions. Council previously approved the hiring of two part-time officers in July, but only one was hired. In September, the hiring of four part-time officers was approved but, again, only one was hired. The motion made at Monday night's meeting did not specify how many officers would be hired. However, Police Chief Thomas Trachta asked to hire four part-time officers during the borough's Jan. 23 Police Committee meeting. Because the borough's Hiring Committee will be handling applications -- …

Chief Scolded Over Television in Police Department

Should officers from the Nazareth Borough Police Department have access to a television with cable? That was the million-dollar question at Monday night's Police Committee meeting.

If Nazareth Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr. has his way, the RCN cable attached to a donated television in the Nazareth Borough Police Department will remain disconnected. A Highway Department employee was instructed by the mayor to disconnect the cable on Jan. 20. According to Daugherty, Police Chief Thomas Trachta went against a direct order by not removing the television. “Where do you think an officer is most useful?” Daugherty asked at Monday night’s Police Committee meeting. “Sitting in the squad room watching TV, or out in the street patroling?" While Trachta agreed that patroling the streets of Nazareth is where officers are most useful, he asked permission to have the television reconnected, saying it’s used for training purposes and so …

It's a television. It didn't cost the borough anything. As far as the police watching it for entertainment, don't they get breaks? And if they say they aren't or it's against policy, then unless it can be proven otherwise, what's the big deal? It sounds like Mayor Daugherty is nitpicking and one has to wonder what his real issue is. "A lack of respect...and responsibility?" Are you BEING serious…   more ›
