Nazareth Mom Cautions Against 'Fear Mongering' After Sandy Hook

A Nazareth area mom says schools are 'traumatizing' children by punishing them for having a toy gun in school or for drawing a picture of a gun while in school.

The mother of a Nazareth area kindergartner urged the school board Monday night not to create an atmosphere of “fear mongering” that she says is happening in schools around the country in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook massacre. Reading from a prepared statement, Joselyn Burrows cited action elsewhere taken against children for having a toy gun in school or for drawing a picture of a gun while in school. She said schools are “traumatizing” children by taking such actions. ”I’m not expecting you to call police on a 5-year-old,” she said, adding that Nazareth schools are not taking such actions. Burrows also said she is in favor of having security guards or off-duty police officers being armed in school. And she called on the Nazareth …

Lehigh Valley Mom Organizes Artwork for Sandy Hook Project

Lisa Fiore is asking everyone she knows to create artwork for the children and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School as a way to let them know people are thinking about them.

An Emmaus mom is urging her family and friends to grab their crayons and some construction paper and show their support for the Connecticut elementary school where last week a lone gunman went on a shooting rampage, killing 20 children and six adults. Lisa Fiore has been asking everyone she knows to create artwork for the children and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School to let them know that people all over the country are “thinking about them and holding them in healing thoughts.” And now, Fiore, mom to a second-grader at Shoemaker Elementary School, is asking the Emmaus Patch community to join the effort. “The children and families of this community are forever changed. I would love to show support to the school from towns all over …

Dear Newtown, Connecticut

This open letter in response to the tragic school shooting was penned by Hellertown native Emily Doll, a doctoral student at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. It was first published on her Facebook page on Friday.

Dear Newtown, Connecticut, I don’t know you. I’ve never been to your town, I don’t know your friends and families and streets and memories. Like most people, I didn’t know you existed until today, and now my ears keep echoing with your name and your cries; now I close my eyes and picture your woods; now I think of you every time I inhale, exhale, breathe.  I don’t know you, but my heart shattered for you today in a way I can’t comprehend yet. I don’t have answers for you, only shared questions; I don’t have reasons for you, only resonating whys. I’m not there, I’m not with you, I’m not part of you tonight, but from 317 miles away, know that I am grieving with you. I don’t have the intellect to understand what happened today. I don’t have …

If people need to write about their thoughts following this horrific incident, I think that is fair. It is hard to find the lines that separate because of the longstanding issues. When our president spoke last night in Newtown, he said that we must make changes to honor the memory of these victims. It is a discussion and debate that is LONG overdue. The letter from Emily Doll was eloquent and …   more ›

School Shooting Drill in Northampton County Trained Cops for Connecticut-Type Tragedy

Officers from six Northampton County police departments participated in 'Active Shooter' training on July 26 to prepare for the unthinkable, like the horrific act of violence inside Sandy Hook Elementary School.

An "active shooter" drill in Northampton County helped police, school officials and emergency crews practice their response to a rampage like Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Nazareth Area Intermediate School was the scene of multiple -- staged -- tragedies July 26 during specialized training co-hosted by the Upper Nazareth Township Police Department and National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA). About 20 police officers from six Northampton County departments participated in the “Active Shooter” training that Don Alwes, an instructor with NTOA, described as “kind of like a scrimmage.” The 10-hour day included a historical overview of active shooter situations and field training exercises, during…

Needless to say but I am very pleased to read that we do have the ability to respond to a school situation such as the one that just occurred. I would say that it is almost impossible to stop the thoughts and movemets of a person intent on doing harm.   more ›
