Kitten's Ride in Engine Compartment Ends After Parking Lot Rescue

After stopping for lunch at the Panera Bread in Lower Nazareth Township, a mother and daughter from Palmer Township are forced to take action when they notice their car starts to... meow.

How do those “Born to be Wild” lyrics go?  Get your motor running, head out on the highway, Looking for adventure in whatever comes our way.  Ah, yes. I’m sure those were the exact lyrics playing through the mind of the 2.2 pound kitten who decided to hitch a ride -- for just under 10 miles -- inside the engine compartment of a Palmer Township woman’s car.  If you think the kitten was surprised by her suddenly traveling napping spot, imagine what went through the minds of 17-year-old Katie Miller and her mother, Karen, when they stopped for lunch Tuesday afternoon at the Panera Bread in Lower Nazareth Township and realized their car was… meowing. According to Karen Miller, she and her daughter had arrived at the Panera Bread in the …

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Held for New Panera Bread

The new Panera Bread in Lower Nazareth Township was welcomed to the neighborhood during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday morning.

After giving the giant scissors a few practice snips, Jim Merbler, general manager of the new Panera Bread in Lower Nazareth Township, cut the ceremonial blue ribbon, marking the grand opening of the restaurant. Prior to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the new Panera, which opened on April 9 in the Northampton Crossings shopping center, was welcomed to the neighborhood by a slew of local officials, including State Rep. Joe Emrick and representatives from the offices of State Rep. Marcia Hahn and U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent. Dan Chiavaroli, president of Nazareth Borough Council, was also on hand to greet Merbler and Panera Bread. Chiavaroli told Merbler that he first heard of the restaurant's impending arrival through his daughter, who was excited…

Panera Bread Opens in Lower Nazareth

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 18 to welcome the new Panera Bread to the neighborhood.

Panera Bread in Lower Nazareth Township is open for business. The restaurant held a "silent opening" on Monday, April 9, according to Jim Merbler, general manager of the new Panera. The quiet introduction has allowed new employees to learn the ropes without feeling overwhelmed, Merbler said, adding that initial feedback from customers has been "really good." "The neighbors have also been really good," Merbler said. Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar even sent over a platter of wings as a welcoming gift. The Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce will help welcome Panera Bread to the neighborhood by holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 18. The general public is invited to attend and enjoy complimentary coffee and pastries. …

2012 Budget Won't Raise Taxes for Lower Nazareth Residents

Millage rate to remain the same at 4.15

Residents of Lower Nazareth Township already have something to look forward to next year: no tax hike. Township Manager Timm Tenges told the Board of Supervisors at Wednesday night's meeting that the 2012 draft budget will keep the current 4.15 millage rate intact. "This is probably our leanest year," Tenges said. "Things haven't improved much." Tenges said in an effort to "stave off" a tax increase, he cut 4 percent out of the budget, making the proposed spending plan $249,000 less than last year's. "We went through and looked at all of the things we could reduce" while maintaining funding for fire and EMS services, he said. Tenges said he held off on filling a public works department opening and put some other things on hold. He asked …

Lower Nazareth Supervisors Approve Panera Bread plan

A new Panera will be chain's first area restaurant to have drive-through service, but neighboring store owner raises concerns; proposed 2012 budget has no tax hike.

Lower Nazareth Township supervisors on Wednesday approved a land development plan for a proposed Panera Bread restaurant at the site of the former Blockbuster store in the Northampton Crossings shopping center. Meanwhile, the supervisors were told that the proposed 2012 budget does not include a tax increase. The restaurant – which features baked goods, wraps, soups, sandwiches and salads – will be the first Panera location in the area to feature drive-through service. It is scheduled to open early next year. Supervisors unanimously approved the land plan following a brief presentation from project developers and remarks from township engineer Al Kortze, who said all his concerns had been met and recommended approval. Last week, the Lower …

Planning Commission Approves Panera Bread Plan

Panera Bread representatives will now head to the Lower Nazareth Board of Supervisors for final approval.

The land development plan for a new Panera Bread in the Northampton Crossings shopping center was approved Monday night by the Lower Nazareth Planning Commission. Next stop: a meeting with the Board of Supervisors for final approval before construction can begin. Gregory Elko, a principal with Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, showed the commission a revised plan, which showed changes that the township's Zoning Hearing Board recommended in September. Among the conditions for approval were: Commissioners reviewed the zoners' report and listened to the thoughts and recommendations of township engineer Albert Kortze and Lori Seese, the township's planning and zoning administrator. Seese said she believed all of the conditions …

Panera Bread Plans Move Closer to Reality

The restaurant chain's plans for a new location in the Northampton Crossings shopping center received conditional approval Tuesday night.

Plans for a new Panera Bread in Lower Nazareth Township received conditional approval at Tuesday night's Zoning Hearing Board. The restaurant chain hopes to open by February 2012 where the former Blockbuster was once located in the Northampton Crossings shopping center. The currently-empty storefront shares a building with The Futon Experience. The site is located behind McDonalds and across the roadway from Red Robin. Alternate board member Michael Gable read the following variances -- adding the conditions for approval. Each was unanimously approved: The new Panera will be one of the chain’s smallest at just 3,860 square feet, but it will have a drive thru -- something other Panera Bread stores in the area do not have, according to Caryl…
