'Sister to Sister' is a new program that helps Northampton County Prison's female residents re-enter society.
It's safe to say that Northampton County Prison has seen its share of tears. But the tears that flowed Wednesday morning inside the jail's work release dining hall were those of joy, not grief. They came from the 19 members of the prison's new "Sister to Sister" program who had just graduated. "It's one of the best choices I made in a long time for myself," said graduate Jennifer Johnson, whose father flew 10 hours to see the ceremony. She and her classmates wore paper mortarboards that they'd designed for the ceremony, which marked the end of a four-month class designed to reduce recidivism by helping the women re-enter society. The prison's male inmates have had their own version of the program -- it's called Future Foundations -- since …

A Bushkill Township man who told police he'd been awake for over a week was arrested on drug charges Wednesday morning at the Sands Casino in Bethlehem. Miguel Rios, 38, of 106 W. When reviewing surveillance footage, they saw a man -- later identified as Rios -- drop the bag about 40 minutes earlier. The academy included tours of Northampton County Prison and Northampton County Emergency Management Services; a gun range trip, and classes that covered a crime scene investigation, DUI and accident reconstruction, drug identification and mock court hearings, just to name a few. Special instructors included District …

A Lower Nazareth man had to be Tasered three times -- he twice removed the probes as the current was delivered -- when police tried to arrest him for allegedly causing his mother to fall and suffer a head wound.
Police had to use a Taser several times to subdue a Lower Nazareth man accused of causing his mother to fall and suffer a head wound that required 13 staples and five stitches to close. Mark Allen Beers, 45, of the 700 block of Nazareth Pike (Route 191), was arraigned Friday before on-duty District Judge Douglas Schlegel of Wind Gap. He was released Monday from Northampton County Prison after his mother, Louise Beers, posted 10 percent of his $3,000 bail, according to court records. According to the records: On Sept. 29, Colonial Regional Police were dispatched to a home on the 700 block of Nazareth Pike. Police found Louise Beers in a vehicle outside the home, her clothing was covered in blood and she was bleeding from a head laceration. …

With a .22 BAC, Steven M. Fehr, 43, not only admitted to stealing the car he had just wrecked in Plainfield Township, but also the Ruger .380 in his possession.
A rollover crash in a stolen vehicle. A breath test for alcohol measuring almost three times the legal limit. Possessing a stolen handgun and having a criminal record. Those allegations have resulted in a long list of charges against a Bethlehem man involved in a crash Wednesday night in the West Bangor section of Plainfield Township. But a criminal complaint against Steven M. Fehr, 43, shows one thing: He was honest with police. He admitted he had been drinking. He admitted he had a Ruger .380 with him and that it wasn’t his. He admitted he had a criminal record. And according to the arresting officer, “The male also at this time stated his friend was going to be pissed because he didn’t know he took the vehicle.” The complaint, filed by …

The former Bangor Area High School teacher who pleaded guilty to having sex with a 17-year-old student -- sometimes in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart in Lower Nazareth Township -- will remain in prison. Northampton County Judge Emil Giordano has ruled that Rachel L. Farrell won't be allowed work release from Northampton County Prison and must complete her 5- to 23-month sentence, The Morning Call reports. Farrell's defense attorney, Steven Mills, argued that his client was a model prisoner and had a factory job waiting for her, the report states. The 25-year-old former teacher has stood in front of the judge before, just after being incarcerated. She asked Giordano for house arrest because she was unable to eat in prison. Mills has said …

According to a report in The Express-Times, Rachel L. Farrell, who was sentenced in June to 5 to 23 months in Northampton County Prison, appeared before Judge Emil Giordano Friday morning to seek the work release. Tiffany Litchfield, of Bushkill Township, was arrested at gunpoint earlier this year in Easton. She's again facing charges after allegedly charging $220 to a Stockertown man's debit/credit card without permission.
A Stockertown man told police that Tiffany Litchfield is a “family friend” but he didn’t authorize her to charge $220 on his debit/credit card, court records say. Police got in touch with Litchfield -- who was arrested at gunpoint earlier this year in Easton -- but she never showed up for an interview and wouldn’t return an officer’s calls. That was in early June. On Friday, the Bushkill Township resident was arraigned on several charges and ended up in Northampton County Prison. A criminal complaint filed by Stockertown Officer Alex Soloe says that on June 7, he spoke to Donald Good of Bushkill Street about $220 taken without authorization from his debit/credit card. Good said he got two unauthorized transactions from Western Union for $…
