Police Committee Meets Without Mayor Monday

Nazareth Borough Council's Police Committee will meet tonight despite the loss of its leader, Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr.

The three-member Police Committee—an arm of Nazareth Borough Council—and Police Chief Thomas Trachta will hold its first meeting tonight without a leader. The resignation of Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr. went into effect April 15, and he previously said his “recent and sudden resignation has not been for any other reason than personal.”  When announcing the change in leadership, Council president Dan Chiavaroli said, "The Council and I have worked with Mayor Daugherty very hard over the last three-plus years dealing with the Nazareth Borough Police Department and its difficulties.” He added that borough officials will now "look in a different direction.” According to the Act 43 of 2012—Section 1123.1—which modernized and recodified the Borough …

Man Forged Check of Good Samaritan, Police Say

Thomas Frederick Hosler, 42, of Lehighton, is facing charges after allegedly forging and cashing a $250 check of a Nazareth resident.

A Lehighton man is accused of forging and cashing a $250 check of a Nazareth resident who allowed him to live in his house after he said he had nowhere to go. Court records say Thomas Frederick Hosler, 42, lived with the Nazareth man for about two weeks on Evergreen Street before stealing the man’s check, forging the man’s name, filling in the amount of $250 and cashing it at a Bank of America in Whitehall Township on Jan. 30. Hosler met the man at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg when both men were patients there, the records say. The man invited Hosler to live in his home “after finding out from [Hosler] that he had no other place to reside.” The records list Hosler’s address as being in Lehighton, Carbon County. Road Rage on Route 248 Leads to Charges, Police Say

Gregory Freed, 44, of Allentown, faces charges after allegedly damaging a pickup truck and slapping its driver in a road rage case in Nazareth.

Nazareth police have charged an Allentown man in a November road rage incident in which the man allegedly caused more than $2,300 in damage by kicking a pickup truck, then slapping the truck’s driver, breaking his glasses and causing him to fall, court records say. Gregory Freed, 44, of 914 E. Union St., is facing charges of criminal mischief and harassment in connection with the incident on the afternoon of Nov. 28, at Route 248 and S. Broad Street. Borough Patrolman Stephen Schleig writes in a criminal complaint that he found the pickup driver on the ground with Freed standing in front of him when the officer arrived around 3:15 p.m. He said he had been dispatched to a car crash with two men fighting. Mom Accused of Helping Son Steal Gets ARD

Christine Petchonka, 46, of Nazareth, was accepted Monday into the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program for her role in a vehicle break-in spree that spanned the Lehigh Valley, according to published reports.

The Nazareth mom accused of driving her 16-year-old son and his friend across the Lehigh Valley to break into unlocked vehicles will have a clean record if she follows through on probation. Christine Petchonka, 46, of the 100 block of S. Main Street, was accepted Monday into the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program for first-time offenders, according to a report in The Morning Call. The report says Petchonka's record will be expunged if she completes nine months of probation and pays court costs and fines. Petchonka had been facing charges of recklessly endangering another person, criminal conspiracy—theft from a motor vehicle, loitering or prowling at nighttime and theft from a motor vehicle. Man Sexually Assaulted Teens in Nazareth, Police Say

Nathan Riley, 20, of Effort is accused of sexually assaulting two 14-year-old girls behind a house on Belvidere Street and at the Diva Wash & Dry.

A Monroe County man in prison for the alleged sexual assault of a young girl has been charged with sexually assaulting two 14-year-old girls in Nazareth.  Nathan Riley, 20, of Effort, was arraigned Thursday in front of District Judge John Capobianco and returned to Monroe County Prison under $50,000 bail -- $25,000 per case. His bail for the Monroe County case also is $50,000.  Riley was charged with one count each of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault, and two counts each of aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors and contact/communication with minor-sexual offenses. DUI Driver Hit Pedestrian, Nazareth Police Say

A Lower Nazareth Township woman was under the influence of multiple controlled substances when her she lost control of her vehicle and struck a pedestrian and a parked car, according to Nazareth police. A 55-year-old Bethlehem man, identified in court records as John E. Bishop, was severely injured in the Dec. 1 crash and was airlifted to a hospital, according to a press release issued later that day. Natasha Romanishan, 22, of the 400 block of Nazareth Pike, was arraigned Tuesday in front of District Judge John Capobianco. Nazareth Police Department Plans Still a Mystery

The future of the Nazareth Borough Police Department is still being determined, and the borough's Police Committee won't elaborate on council's working plans.

The fate of the Nazareth Borough Police Department lies somewhere among Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. What are the specifics of each plan? The borough’s Police Committee isn’t saying.  “There is a Plan A, a Plan B and a Plan C,” explained committee Chairman Jack Herbst. “Something will be done.” Herbst was answering a question Monday night from Councilman Charles Donello, who wondered, “Do we have any idea where we stand on our police department? Are we getting anywhere with this?” Donello added that he feels “we’re not getting anywhere” because of council’s monthly schedule. Drunken Man Nearly 'Fell Into Traffic,' Police Say

Gil Gillespie, 54, of Nazareth was taken into custody after allegedly staggering and stumbling his way down the borough's Main Street.

A Nazareth man with a history of driving under the influence and being drunk in public was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after police allege he almost fell into Main Street traffic.  Gil Gillespie, 54, a Spruce Street resident, was allegedly seen staggering near Belvidere and Main streets, police say. In his accident report, Officer Daniel Troxell said he watched Gillespie step off a curb and almost fall into the path of oncoming vehicles. Troxell notes that Gillespie continued to stagger down S. Main Street and was incapable of walking safely. According to police, Gillespie was slurring his speech and was not cooperative when Troxell asked him questions.
