'No Formal Police Plan Before Us,' Councilman Says

Nazareth Police Committee provides update on status of police department's future.

The Nazareth Police Committee held its first meeting Monday night with new Mayor Carl Strye Jr. among the participants. While 15 residents turned out to find out the status of the future of police department services in the borough at last month's meeting, only two were present Monday night. And Councilman Jack Herbst—who chairs the police committee—stated that there's basically nothing new to report. "No formal policing plan has been brought before us," Herbst said. "We have nothing negotiated with Colonial." Resident Wayne Schissler, a frequent Nazareth Patch commenter, asked the committee what the status was with negotiations involving Colonial Regional Police. Last month, the Police Committee informed residents that it was awaiting a …

no formal plan? what walbert didn't get back to you yet. This council should have a Formal plan for our own dept so when and if another dept makes a offer we as taxpayers can compare and we should know that plan and approve of it. This is not a job toatlly for the council as again they prove they have no plan now nor have they in a decade at the very least. For the police or the recreation dept.   more ›

Friction on Nazareth Police Committee

Tension over police issues mounted at Nazareth Borough Council meeting among Police Committee members.

Monday's meeting of the Nazareth Police Committee might not have the fireworks that came about over police issues at the recent Borough Council meeting. As Councilman Jack Herbst was giving his Police Committee report, he responded to a question from Councilman Charles Donello. "If you have a police issue, you come to me," Herbst stated before a crowd that had gathered at the May 6 meeting to hear a presentation on the pool and find out who the borough chose at its new mayor. "There wasn't an issue," Donello shot back. "I'm not sure why someone would go crying to you. This is getting a little carried away. If a council member has to be afraid to ask a question, then something is wrong." Herbst responded that it obviously was an issue since…

Wayne, you make a compelling point and while we may not always agree (though it seems to be rare that we don't) I am very glad you are out there and taking note of ALL the stories, not just what is reported. I wish I could do the same... Rick, it's hard to disagree with anything you just said.   more ›

School Lockdown, Special Pool Meeting Top Local News

A lockdown at the Nazareth Area Middle School this past week had the community reeling as a bullet was found in a school bathroom.

The Nazareth Area School District highlighted the Week in Review with a lockdown at the middle school, the hiring of a new curriculum director and the drama class moving on after sex assault allegations against their former teacher. Meanwhile, Nazareth's new mayor was gearing up for a write-in vote in Tuesday's primary election and residents gathered for a special meeting about the pool. This is the Week in Review: Nazareth Area Middle School was under a lockdown Wednesday morning for an hour as the Upper Nazareth Police Department found a bullet in bathroom. Nazareth Pool Must Remain Crown Jewel, Residents Say

Nazareth residents will form a pool study group to help plan new municipal pool.

Nazareth residents who won’t have a municipal pool this summer for the first time in 74 years jumped in head first Thursday night at the first public forum on what a new Boro-Park pool should look like. Suggestions, statements and warnings flowed from the 40 or so people in attendance, as well as from moderators Ted and Susan Wallover of Wallover Aquatics of Lancaster, who will be designing the new pool, estimated to cost $5 million, and talked about the successful pool they designed about 10 years ago in Quakertown. Council President Dan Chiavaroli, meanwhile, announced that a pool study group made up of borough residents is being formed. He also said Wilson borough is offering Nazareth residents the chance to pay the same rates at Wilson…

Thank you very much for your answer, Nazareth Mom. You confirmed opinions that have been echoed by many of my friends. Personally, my family and I have stuck with the borough pool in recent years, but that's due to medical reasons with me. I think if Nazareth can get a significant amount of money in grants and funding, they should add those amenities. Rosemary also had an awesome idea of adding a…   more ›

Nazareth Seeks Part-Time Police Officer

The Nazareth Borough Council has directed its board secretary to place advertisement for a part-time officer.

Nazareth residents, don't get your hopes up. The Nazareth Borough Council has asked its board secretary to advertise for the hiring of a part-time police officer. Councilman Jack Herbst, who heads the Police Committee, told the audience attending the recent Borough Council meeting that Police Chief Thomas Trachta recommended not hiring a part-time officer under consideration. But that does not mean that the Nazareth Borough Police Department's future is certain. The Police Committee is still awaiting a proposal from Colonial Regional Police before it decides the fate of its own police department. "We're reopening the process and leaving it open-ended," Herbst said. "We're putting in an advertisement accepting applications. We'll see them …

Nazareth Residents Can Make Splash at Special Pool Meeting

Nazareth Borough Council is holding an 'informal meeting' at 7 p.m. Thursday regarding the future of the Boro-Park Pool.

Nazareth residents will have a chance to give their input into the borough's next municipal pool. Nazareth Borough Council is holding an "informal meeting" at council chambers at 7 p.m. Thursday to discuss the next steps now that the Boro-Park Pool will be closed for the 2013 summer season. Council President Dan Chiavaroli announced in a press release "that all borough residents who have an interest in our pool's future are strongly encouraged to attend and be heard." The council voted earlier this month to close its 74-year-old deteriorated pool permanently and also opted not to make a quick fix that might have it open for part of the summer. Representatives from Wallover Associates, the borough's pool consultant, and borough officials …

The Nazareth Pool is enjoyed by a lot of residents. It's worth paying for a new one. I agree with the other commenter, the idea of dividing the pool into sections (i.e. lap lanes, etc.) is a good one. Don't know about diving boards though. I think insurance companies frown on them.   more ›

Could Nazareth Mayor Lose GOP Write-in Bid?

New Nazareth Mayor Carl Strye Jr. is running as a write-in candidate on the Republican ticket in Tuesday's primary election.

Nazareth Mayor Carl Strye Jr. has spent a week now in the borough's big chair. In another week, he will face a possible challenge to his appointed seat. Strye is running in Tuesday's primary election as a write-in candidate on the Republican ticket. He needs to get at least get 10 write-in votes to get on the ballot in the November general election. But an unknown Republican candidate could actually beat Strye on write-in votes and get the November party nod. "There's a chance that could happen," Strye said Tuesday. "If it happens, it happens." Strye stated that he should have filed on the GOP ticket for mayor instead of running as a write-in. Councilman Jack Herbst is running unopposed on the Democratic ticket for mayor. Strye was …

New Nazareth Mayor, Possible New Pool Top Local News

Nazareth welcomes Carl Strye Jr. as its new mayor while the Borough Council discusses plans for a new pool.

Nazareth continued to be the focal point for local news this week as the borough welcomed a new mayor while the Borough Council decided that it was going to push forward with plans for a new pool. Meanwhile, one school director expressed disgust over the fact that a middle school drama teacher allegedly sexually assaulted a boy over a two-year period. The middle school principal also addressed the issue in a letter to parents. The news wasn't all bad in the Nazareth Area School District. Carl Strye Jr. is sworn in by District Judge John Capobianco during a short ceremony at Nazareth Borough Hall Wednesday morning. A Nazareth school board member says he complained two years ago about a former teacher now charged with sexually assaulting a …

Daugherty Removed from Nazareth Boards

Former Nazareth Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr.'s spot on several boards was wiped clean by Borough Council Monday night.

Before the Nazareth Borough Council could name a new mayor Monday night, it had to remove the old one. While Fred Daugherty Jr. resigned more than two weeks ago, Monday's meeting was the first time the council had a chance to address the issue. And the first step was accepting Daugherty's resignation. Councilman Frank Maurek made the motion and Vice President Larry Stoudt seconded, adding "with regret." That cleared the way for the Borough Council to appoint a new mayor, which it did by naming Carl Strye Jr. to fill the seat for the rest of the year. While Strye took his seat with the council for the rest of the meeting, he has yet to be sworn in. That must be done with a District Justice present and will probably take place at June's …

Republican Write-In Candidate Drops Out of Mayoral Race

Nazareth resident Deb Miller's candidacy as a write-in on the Republican ticket in the May 21 primary election has ended.

New Nazareth Mayor Carl Strye Jr. has one less opponent to worry about in the May 21 primary election for mayor. Deb Miller, a self-employed counselor and mother of six, has ended her bid as a Republican write-in candidate in the primary election, the Easton Express-Times is reporting. Miller had announced her candidacy less than a month ago, following the recent resignation of former Nazareth mayor Fred Daugherty Jr. Miller started a write-in campaign for mayor, but decided to drop it because of Strye's appointment as mayor by Borough Council Monday night. "Right now, I don't see any point. My goal was to prohibit [Jack] Herbst from running unopposed," Miller told the Express-Times. "Now that Carl is in, that has been accomplished." …

Deb miller dropped out of the race because she knew she did not have a shot at a write in campaign. Nobody knows her. She may think she could get votes but I beg to differ. And about her qualifications I question that too. And what experience does she have none. She just found out she was. Republican. Or is she a democratic , maybe green party. I am glad for the boroough she dropped out.   more ›
