13 Nazareth Area Teachers Honored

Thirteen Nazareth Area teachers were honored at school board work session Monday for completing an induction program.

Thirteen Nazareth Area teachers were honored Monday night for reaching a landmark in their careers. The teachers—some permanent, some long-term substitutes—were recognized for completing an induction program, one of three requirements teachers must meet to gain level-two certification. The other requirements, according to superintendent Dennis Riker, are three years of successful teaching and completing 24 post-graduate credits. Isabel Resende, assistant to the superintendent, presented certificates to the “inducted” teachers at Monday night’s school board meeting. Also honored were the teachers’ mentors—the folks who have traveled farther down the road of the teaching profession. Riker said teachers in the induction program meet regularly…

The Nazareth Area School Board hires Janet Wolff to fill one of its two curriculum director jobs.

The Nazareth Area School District has filled one of its two curriculum director jobs with a 20-year veteran of New York City schools who is leaving her current job in the Allentown School District under the fear of a future layoff. The school board hired Janet Wolff, currently an assistant principal at Allen High School, as director of elementary education for grades K through 6. Her salary will be $103,000 a year. Wolff replaces Tamara Gary, who was hired last month as principal of Bangor High School. She will share curriculum duties with Mark Madson, who will handle grades 7 through 12. Wolff’s start date has yet to be determined, superintendent Dennis Riker said. Previously, the curriculum directors’ duties were divided by subjects. …

School Director 'Disgusted' By Teacher Sex Charges

A Nazareth school board member says he complained two years ago about a former teacher now charged with sexually assaulting a student.

Former Nazareth Middle School drama teacher Shawn Salevsky is in jail, accused of sexually assaulting a boy in school, and a school board member says he wishes he had done more to try to oust Salevsky two years ago. School director Chris M. Miller told the Morning Call that he complained about Salevsky when the teacher had students perform songs that contained sexual innuendos. Miller said he wanted the teacher fired and is now disgusted by the case. At a school board meeting in November 2011, Miller criticized Salevsky for exposing students to inappropriate content, according to a Lehigh Valley Live report. Some parents and students defended Salevsky, who was reprimanded but kept his job. A woman whose daughter was in Salevsky's class …

Oops, No 2-Year School Board Seat Up for Grabs in Primary

Northampton County Voter Registration Office says there will be no two-year term in Region 3 for Nazareth School Board election.

There's one less school seat available in the upcoming primary election. The office got word via email from the Nazareth Area School District Friday that there was no two-year vacancy, Stubits said.
