Lower Nazareth Elementary Students Send Donation-Packed Truck to New York

Lower Nazareth Elementary School students collect donations for Staten Island residents affected by Superstorm Sandy; a packed U-HAUL made the two-hour trip Friday afternoon.

One day after President Barack Obama toured Staten Island, a New York borough devastated by Superstorm Sandy, elementary school students in a Pennsylvania township loaded up a U-HAUL truck with donations. Students at Lower Nazareth Elementary School -- with special help from the school's Present Young Leaders Of Nazareth (PYLON) Club -- quickly pitched in when a teacher put out a call for donations. Barbara Koegler, a kindergarten teacher at the school, was the driving force behind the donation campaign. Before a recent trip to Brooklyn, N.Y., for a baptism, Koegler's daughter, Katherine, was moved by photos published online of Sandy's devastation. More specifically, the Koegler family wanted to help Staten Island, often called the …

So I take my earlier comment back. If you don't live in Lower Nazareth, don't bother calling anyone. They're not interested in helping catch the guy.   more ›

Local Blood Center Calls for O Negative Donors

There are eight local blood drives scheduled in March, or you can call (800) 223-6667 to schedule an appointment at the Miller-Keystone Blood Center in Bethlehem.

Miller-Keystone Blood Center has issued a call for blood donors with the O negative blood type. While donations of all types are needed, O negative donations are critical, as individuals with the O negative blood type are referred to as universal blood donors. This means that the red blood cells of an O negative donor can be transfused to anyone, regardless of their blood type. These donations are particularly important in cases of accident and severe trauma, when there may not be time available to confirm the specific blood type of the patient in need of a life-saving transfusion. To schedule an appointment call (800) 223-6667, or visit GIVEaPINT.org to find a blood drive in your area. The Bethlehem office is at 1465 Valley Center Parkway…

Nazareth Schools Meet AYP for Second Year in a Row

The full report cards for Adequate Yearly Progress won't be available until early November; however, each of the six schools in the Nazareth Area School District met their AYP targets.

All Nazareth schools met their Adequate Yearly Progress targets for the second-straight year -- more evidence of students' strength in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessments (PSSA) tests. As required by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, the PSSA is Pennsylvania's statewide standards-based assessment. The goal is for all students to be "proficient" or "advanced" by 2014 -- meaning they have mastered Pennsylvania's assessment content standards at their grade level. A school or district's performance on statewide math and reading assessments is the primary factor in determining AYP, which is also required under NCLB. The math and reading tests are given in grades 3 through 8 and 11th grade. Student participation and graduation rate …
