Nazareth Seeks Part-Time Police Officer

The Nazareth Borough Council has directed its board secretary to place advertisement for a part-time officer.

Nazareth residents, don't get your hopes up. The Nazareth Borough Council has asked its board secretary to advertise for the hiring of a part-time police officer. Councilman Jack Herbst, who heads the Police Committee, told the audience attending the recent Borough Council meeting that Police Chief Thomas Trachta recommended not hiring a part-time officer under consideration. But that does not mean that the Nazareth Borough Police Department's future is certain. The Police Committee is still awaiting a proposal from Colonial Regional Police before it decides the fate of its own police department. "We're reopening the process and leaving it open-ended," Herbst said. "We're putting in an advertisement accepting applications. We'll see them …

Week in Review

Police Petitions, Deals and Disgust Top Local News

New Patch Editor Dino Ciliberti wraps up first week covering one of Nazareth's hottest topics: The future of the town's police force.

Nazareth Patch got a new editor this week. But no new police force. Or mayor. Or pool. In our Week in Review, the focus was on Monday's meetings. A Police Committee in which the departed Mayor Fred Daugherty wasn't mentioned and an update on the police force wasn't as forthcoming as residents would have liked. A petition to save the Nazareth Police Department is circulating as officials await a proposal from Colonial Regional Police. The school board is raising taxes but at least no programs are falling by the wayside. Nazareth Councilman Jack Herbst said the fate of the Nazareth Police Department remains up in the air until council hears from Colonial Regional Police. As Nazareth awaits proposal from Colonial Regional Police, a petition …

Police Deal: 'It Seems Like This is Really Dragging On'

Nazareth Councilman Jack Herbst said the fate of the Nazareth Police Department remains up in the air until council hears from Colonial Regional Police.

The future of police coverage for Nazareth is being tied up by Colonial Regional Police. Councilman Jack Herbst, in leading Monday night's Police Committee meeting, told the audience of about 15 residents that there was "no further news or status updates on the future of the police force." In its first meeting since the resignation of Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr., the three-member Police Committee—an arm of Nazareth Borough Council—met for 10 minutes with only cryptic reference to Colonial Regional, which wasn't even mentioned by name in Herbst's chat with Councilman Charles Donello. "Did we give them a time limit at all?" Donello asked Herbst. "It seems like this is really dragging along. I wish they'd make up their minds and give us some …

I was at the meeting and found it very disturbing how it was handled. Very "cryptic" and I had no clue what they exactly just said. I am glad for the 20 extra minutes to try to understand but really, this meeting did not give me a good feeling how Nazareth is being run. As far as the police force cost estimates goes, I don't understand the comment that the estimate for Nazareth keeping its own …   more ›

Police Committee Meets Without Mayor Monday

Nazareth Borough Council's Police Committee will meet tonight despite the loss of its leader, Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr.

The three-member Police Committee—an arm of Nazareth Borough Council—and Police Chief Thomas Trachta will hold its first meeting tonight without a leader. The resignation of Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr. went into effect April 15, and he previously said his “recent and sudden resignation has not been for any other reason than personal.”  When announcing the change in leadership, Council president Dan Chiavaroli said, "The Council and I have worked with Mayor Daugherty very hard over the last three-plus years dealing with the Nazareth Borough Police Department and its difficulties.” He added that borough officials will now "look in a different direction.” According to the Act 43 of 2012—Section 1123.1—which modernized and recodified the Borough …

Hey trollster. If you are so smart about everything learn to use spell check. What gives you the right to judge any of the three candidates . You are just a lame person that hides behind his or her fake name to critize others. Your brain obviously couldn't solve a problem . If you are so smart why not throw your name in for mayor. I didn't think so.I guess you have such low self esteem and know …   more ›

A two-car accident in front of Diner 248 sent a 4-year-old Easton boy to the hospital with injuries to his face, according to police.

A 4-year-old Easton boy was injured Tuesday night when the car he was traveling in was involved in a two-car accident in front of Diner 248. The diner is on the border of Lower Nazareth Township and Palmer Township—just east of Route 33. The 4-year-old boy, who was a passenger in Wilson’s car, sustained injuries to his face and was transported to St. Luke’s University …
