Motorcycle Crash, Chemical Odor Led to Haz-Mat Response

After crashing his motorcycle, a Bushkill Township man smelled of an unidentified 'chemical type' odor; three people were decontaminated by a Haz-Mat team after being exposed.

It was not a crashed mobile drug lab that brought out teams from Lehigh County Haz-Mat and the Department of Environmental Protection's Emergency Response Program, as earlier reports indicated. According to Bushkill Township Police, the day's events began around 3:13 p.m. when Dean A. Tomsic, 51, crashed his Harley-Davidson motorcycle near the intersection of Old Allentown and Male roads. When police arrived, according to a press release, the motorcycle was on the side of the road, and Tomsic had been taken back to his home on Old Allentown Road. When police and Bushkill Township EMS found Tomsic, they discovered that he was injured in the crash. As Tomsic was placed in the ambulance, the emergency medical technicians (EMTs) detected a …

Patient, EMS Personnel Decontaminated After Bushkill Township Crash

Bushkill Township police fear a vehicle involved in a crash was carrying chemicals used to make methamphetamines.

UPDATE, 6:06 p.m.: One patient and several EMS personnel had to be decontaminated after a crash and spill in Bushkill Township, according to Robert Mateff, the director of Northampton County Emergency Management Services. Teams from Lehigh County Haz-Mat and the Department of Environmental Protection's Emergency Response Program were dispatched around 4 p.m. to the crash at Old Allentown and Male roads. Early dispatches said police feared the vehicle was a mobile drug lab, carrying chemicals used to make methamphetamines, according to a report in The Morning Call. Mateff would not confirm or deny these reports -- his main concerns were for the patients' safety and to make sure the scene was safe. According to Mateff, when fire and EMS …

Bushkill Township House Fire Under Investigation

It could take weeks to determine what caused a late-night blaze that leveled a home on Bickert Lane in Bushkill Township.

The cause of a late-night blaze that leveled a vacant home at 102 Bickert Lane -- just off W. Aluta Mill Road -- in Bushkill Township is still under investigation, according to Officer Randy Knauss, and may remain that way for weeks. Fire departments from Bushkill, Nazareth, Upper Nazareth Township, Lower Nazareth Township, Plainfield Township and Wind Gap were dispatched around 10:20 p.m. Jan. 11 for a "fully involved" house fire. Bushkill's fire chief, Brian Stahl, also requested the Northampton County 911 Center to dispatch the township's Ladies Auxiliary. It took about 45 minutes to an hour to bring the fire under control, Knauss said. Firefighters, however, stayed into the early morning hours to take care of hot spots as debris was …

I was worried about that... I am glad it wasn't Ashley's house. So it was the vacant one at 102 Bickert Road. I wonder how that started. I smell foul play.   more ›

Meet Nazareth's "Whiz Kid" Allen Rutan

Autism spectrum disorders didn't stop Allen Rutan from finishing an Eagle Scout project that helped out a non-profit.

After two years, 359 man hours and help from a slew of volunteers, Allen Rutan finished his Eagle Scout project -- six hay racks for Equi-librium, a non-profit organization that empowers "individuals with special needs to reach their highest potential through horse-related activities." Allen, 17, of Nazareth received his Eagle Scout award on Sept. 25 at Holy Family Catholic Church. “It was one of the happiest occasions of our lives,” said Deborah Rutan, his mother. Allen has been in Cub Scouts since he was seven, Deborah said, adding that he is member of Boy Scout Troop 44, which is chartered through the Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Company. Allen isn’t just another "Whiz Kid" from Nazareth, however. He was adopted as a baby from …

Food, Fun, Family and Fireworks Make Up Bushkill Twp. Carnival

Tonight, Saturday, is the last night to enjoy the annual Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Company Annual Fundraiser Carnival.

The Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Company Annual Fundraiser Carnival -- I’ll say it again, "Whew!" -- may not be the biggest carnival held in the Lehigh Valley, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in fun, food, family and fireworks. A "small" carnival may sound like a detriment, but it's certainly not in Bushkill Township. In about one hour, you can experience everything the carnival has to offer, and then relax at a picnic table and listen to a great local band. The Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Company Annual Fundraiser Carnival also has a little something for everyone, whether you're a rock ’n' roll fan, a bingo enthusiast or a thrill seeker. The annual carnival may be ending today, Saturday, but here's what you still have …
