As part of its recognition for a conservation award, Hercules Cement Company donated $10,000 -- provided by EnerNOC Inc. -- to the Bushkill Stream Conservancy and the Children's Home of Easton.
Hercules Cement Company on Jan. 18 was named a recipient of a 2012 Keystone State Energy Conservation Award for Leadership in Energy Management. The award is sponsored by EnerNOC Inc., a provider of energy management applications and services, and recognizes Pennsylvania organizations that demonstrate a unique commitment to helping electric grid reliability, according to a press release. Winners of the Keystone Award, the press release adds, demonstrated the highest levels of load reduction commitment and performance in a demand response program developed by their local utility, PPL Electric Utilities. The Forks Township Board of Supervisors recently approved a $600 donation to the Bushkill Stream Conservancy.
The Forks Township Board of Supervisors recently approved a $600 donation -- from the township's general fund -- to the Bushkill Stream Conservancy. The township has, in the past, made a similar donation. Supervisor Robert Egolf is vice president of the organization. Supervisor John O'Neil wondered, "Can we afford $600?" "Yes," according to Finance Director Jim Farley. Bill Sweeney was the first recipient of the Bennett-Merwarth Leadership Award for Excellence in Conservation Leadership.
The Bushkill Stream Conservancy (BSC) presented the Bennett-Merwarth Award for Excellence in Conservation Leadership to Bill Sweeney at its annual picnic this past Saturday, Sept. 17. Sweeney, who has served as the program supervisor for the Environmental Education Center at Jacobsburg State Park since 1999, was the first recipient of the award. Members of the BSC named the award after its first two presidents -- Jack Bennett and Sandy Merwarth -- and is given to an individual whose vision has guided the formation and growth of the Conservancy. Environmental action group begins looking for detergents in the water, too.
At the Bushkill Stream Conservancy meeting Tuesday, member Terry Kleintop reported that fecal coliform bacteria levels continue to be high in the Little Bushkill Creek in Plainfield Township. A group of volunteers tested 23 sites for five weeks earlier this summer. Kleintop, chairman of the Plainfield Township Environmental Advisory Board, said that only one of the sites had a coliform level low enough to meet the state Department of Environmental Protection's requirements. Conservancy secretary Jim Moser said this site is a tributary flowing from a quarry into the Little Bushkill. "We really didn't expect this site to be high," Moser said.
