Robert Kopecek, Longtime President of NCC, Dies

President of Northampton Community College for 26 years, Kopecek led while campus, enrollment and community outreach expanded.

  Robert Kopecek, who led Northampton Community College for 26 years while it significantly expanded course offerings and more than tripled the size of its student enrollment, died at his home in North Carolina on Thursday, the school announced. A news release on the college Website said Kopecek is “remembered as a visionary and hard-driving leader, determined throughout his presidency to expand access to education, to foster economic development, and to make Northampton a world-class community college.” Kopecek took over from the college’s founding president, Richard C. David 'Smokey' N. Stehly Dies at 79; Dr., Professor and Master Woodcarver

David 'Smokey' N. Stehly, 79, of Lower Nazareth Township, began teaching Chemistry in 1960 and retired as head of the Chemistry Department at Muhlenberg College in 1998.

David "Smokey" N. Stehly, Capt. (US Navy), Dr., professor, and master woodcarver, 79, of Lower Nazareth Twp. died peacefully surrounded by his family, Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at his residence. He is the husband of Susanne L. (O'Connor) Stehly. Born in Bethlehem on October 3, 1933 to the late Charles Glenmore Stehly and Anna Catherine (Worsley) Stehly, he was the baby of the family and the last of seven children. As a youth he enjoyed horseback riding, camping, hunting and fishing. He served our country faithfully in the US Navy during the Korean War and the Gulf War and retired in 1992 as a Captain after 42 years of service. He considered the most significant event  of his life to be when he took Fleet Hospital 15 in the Persian Gulf. …

Coroner Seeking Kin of Allentown Man, 52

The Lehigh County coroner is trying to find the next of kin of an Allentown man who died Saturday

Anyone with information about the relatives of Raymond Rudd, Sr. -- a 52-year-old Allentown man who died Saturday -- is asked to contact the Lehigh County coroner's office at 610-782-3426. Rudd died at Sacred Heart Hospital. He lived at 122 N. 11th Street in Allentown. An autopsy was performed Monday but cause of death is pending results of toxicology tests, according to the coroner's office.

Arlen Specter Celebrated at Funeral by Friends, Family and the Famous

Vice President Joe Biden was among those to speak about the 82-year-old former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania who died Sunday.

Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) was remembered by loved ones Tuesday as a man of independence, virtue and influence, with well over 1,000 people, including Vice President Joe Biden, filling a suburban Philadelphia synagogue for his funeral. Har Zion Temple in Lower Merion Township's Penn Valley held the 90-minute ceremony before Specter, who died Sunday at 82 in his Philadelphia home, was to be buried in Huntington Valley. Pallbearers wheeled his American flag-draped casket out of the temple as Frank Sinatra's "My Way" played. Before the funeral, the Specter family greeted a steady stream of mourners that began pouring in more than two hours early. Robert A. March, 61, of Friedenstahl Avenue, Upper Nazareth Township, died suddenly late Friday evening, Oct. 12, 2012, in his home. He was the husband of Maxaine A. (Ackerman) Sprague since Feb. 25, 2000. Born in Easton, he was a son of the late John A. and Sadie (Frack) March. Robert worked as a machine operator for the former S & L Plastics Co., Upper Nazareth, before retiring in 2009. He was a member of Vigilance Hose Co. No. 1 and the Upper Nazareth Fire Department. A funeral for former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) will be held at noon Tuesday at Har Zion Temple in Lower Merion, Montgomery County. The service is open to the public; cameras and recording devices are prohibited. Specter will then be buried in Huntingdon Valley, Montgomery County. Among those expected to attend the funeral is Vice President Joe Biden, USA Today reported. Har Zion's address is 1500 Hagys Ford Road, Narberth, PA 19072; it is less than a mile from the Gladwyne exit (Exit 337) of Interstate 76. Sen. Arlen Specter Dies

The former U.S. Senator fought a long battle with cancer.

Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter died Sunday, according to CNN, at age 82 in his Philadelphia home. Specter represented Pennsylvania in the Senate for 30 years. Specter started as a Democrat but switched to the Republican party before being elected to the U.S. Senate. The senator made headlines in 2009 when he switched to the Democratic Party. Specter announced his diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease in 2005. He underwent multiple treatments of chemotherapy and finally succumbed to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma Sunday. Sen. Robert H. Keck, 89, of Nazareth, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at Moravian Hall Square. For 66 years he was married to Anita M. (Knecht) Keck who died on Dec. 20, 2011. Born in Lower Nazareth Township, Robert was the son of the late Harrison and Hester (Fogel) Keck. He was a sales manager for the Keystone Cement Co. in Bath for over 20 years before retiring in January of 1991. In conjunction with his work, he was a member and former officer of the Ready Mix Concrete Association and the Pennsylvania Aggregate Concrete Association (PACA). In his community, Robert was a Deacon, Elder and member of the men's choir at St. John's United Church of Christ, Nazareth.
