Scavenger Hunt Via Car Raises Money for Fire Company, Angel 34

The Nazareth Road Rally fired up for the 14th time this past Saturday. The rally was held in conjunction with Nazareth Days.

For the 14th year, Lehigh Valley residents swiftly made their way through historical downtown Nazareth during the annual Nazareth Road Rally (NRR) this past Saturday.

The NRR is not so much a race as it is a scavenger hunt via car.

“It’s our way to give back to the community… and it’s our day to have some fun,” said Carl Strye, president of , in a previous interview.

And organizers certainly don't make the rally easy.

“We take about three months to write the clues [for] the NRR, and we make the directions very particular,” explained Roy "Buzzy" Seiple, chief of .

Some proceeds from the Road Rally will benefit the  of Bushkill Township, which raises money for a cure for pediatric cancer, while the rest will benefit Vigilance Hose.

As stated above, the rally is not really a race. Each registrant received a packet with directions and questions that needed to be answered along the way. The answers were found along a specified route, so that no one can cheat mileage.

Winners were determined by the number of correct answers. The top eight spots won cash prizes. And although the rally is not a race, time was counted for tie-breaking purposes.

"My favorite part is watching people get shocked at the answers and what they missed along the way," joked Seiple's daughter, Christine.

The grand prize was $100; however, it's not about the money for NRR defending champion Dave Smith.

“I mostly compete for the bragging rights," he said.

The first rally had 38 cars competing and subsequent rallies have averaged 75 to 80 cars each year.
