Nazareth Takes Meaningful Strides for Childhood Cancer Awareness

About 400 people Saturday morning participated in the 2nd annual 5K Dragonfly Run/Walk for Brenton's Hope, an organization that helps raise childhood cancer awareness and funds for local families.

“Nazareth is awesome!” exclaimed Louise Krouse, president and co-founder of Brenton’s Hope, after about 400 orange- and blue-shirted walkers and runners participated in the 2nd annual 5K Dragonfly Run/Walk.

Registration proceeds will benefit Brenton’s Hope -- a non-profit organization founded in April 2011. The organization helps raise childhood cancer awareness and funds for local families facing the hardships of a childhood cancer diagnosis.

The foundation was inspired by Louise's son, Brenton J. Krouse, who lost his battle against T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia on June 1, 2009 at just 11 years old.

The walk/run, which drew participants from across the Lehigh Valley, began Saturday morning at Nazareth Area Middle School before winding through Nazareth and then ending back at the middle school.

Following the 5K and a “fun run” for children ages 10 and under, a raffle and awards ceremony were held.

Medals were given out to the top performing males and females in each age group, and special trophies were given to the overall top male and female:

  • Colin Henderson -- 18 minutes and 54 seconds
  • Dana Sugra -- 19 minutes and 49 seconds

Never far from Louise Krouse's side Saturday was her husband, Jerry, and their daughter, Avery, 11. Brenton's Hope, inspired by a son and brother, operates out of the Krouses' home in Bushkill Township.
