Visited the Kutztown Festival on its first day. There is an activity patch developed by the German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University and the Girl Scouts of Eastern PA. Available for Girl Scouts and non-girl scouts. Complete the passport and $5. Additional "rocker patches" to complete the full set of activities in workshops and seminars throughout the year. Great way for kids and adults to experience more about PA Dutch culture. Also - I highly recommend the $2 Birch Beer available at the booth not far from the Big Red "churchy" building. Apple dumplings are also fabulous. Make sure to get it with any topping to soften the pie crust. I chose whipped cream; delicious. Also, try the Ox Sandwich, if so inclined. Warning, the Ox is roasting on a spit at the booth; some families may not be ready to explain where "meat" comes from.

Thanks for the tips, Silagh. Sounds like a great day trip. The festival runs through next Sunday, July 8.
