Two High School Seniors Recognized for Their Brains

Two Nazareth Area High School seniors are ranked tops in a National Merit test.

Two students are not only tops in their school; they're also among the best in the nation.

High School Principal Alan Davis recognized two students at the Nazareth School Board meeting Monday night for how they did on some recent test scores.

Senior Erin Andrews is one of 34,000 students recognized nationally as a commended student in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Jeremy Martinez, another senior, has received honorable mention in the National Hispanic Recognition Program for 2011-2012. He was selected as one of only 5,000 Hispanic/Latino students nationwide for his overall GPA as well as his performance last year on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

"They aren't just great in the classroom, but they are also excellent citizens and involved in a lot of activities," Davis said.

The students received a round of applause and handshakes from board members.

Meanwhile, the board also was greeted with a performance by students from the Drama Club.

The club is presenting "13," a new musical featuring 13-year-olds going through the trials and tribulations of turning 13, thus becoming teenagers.

The group, outfitted in "13" T-shirts, sang a song, "A Little More Homework" that will be featured in the performance.

The production will be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12.

Tickets are $7 in advance and $5 for students and seniors.
