Nazareth High School’s planetarium is returning for the start of the upcoming school year.

The planetarium was closed for the 2012-2013 year as a cost-cutting measure with the intention of keeping it closed through the 2014-2015 school year.

But the school board Monday night moved up that timetable so that the planetarium will be opened in a little more than two months.

Superintendent Dennis Riker said seating at the planetarium is in place while projection issues will be smoothed out by opening day. The facility will be used by the astronomy teacher, he said.

The board rescinded a resolution approved March 26, 2012 to end the planetarium program through 2014-2015 but commit $12,000 each year for the planetarium’s potential upgrade in 2015-2016 at a cost up to $48,000.

In other matters Monday night, the board approved a resolution for the high school’s Gay/Straight Alliance – an existing student activity – so the group can begin fundraising efforts.
