Nazareth Area School Board recognizes eight retirees at recent meeting.

Written by Jack Tobias

Nazareth schools have bid farewell to eight staffers who have retired with combined service of about 200 years to the district.

Superintendent Dennis Riker, at last week’s school board meeting, noted that he attended a ceremony honoring the retirees.

He said there was sadness because of their departure but also excitement because of the new faces who will be filling their shoes.

The following are the retirees:

--Mark Atwood, gifted grades four and five, intermediate school, 25 years of service.

--Sally Barthold, kindergarten, Bushkill Elementary, 38 years of service.

--Linda Paukovits, elementary librarian, Bushkill, Lower Nazareth and Shafer, 25 years of service.

--Karen Pearson, German, middle school, 34 years of service.

--Irene Wehinger, learning support grades nine-12, high school(she began in September 1984 at IU-20, then came to the Nazareth district in August 2001).

--Susan Whalen, English grade eight, middle school, 25 years of service.

--Ruth Smith, associate nurse, intermediate school, 24 years of service.

--Bonnie Stewart, associate teacher, Bushkill Elementary, 18 years of service.
