Nazareth Swim Team to Collect Donations for Wounded Warrior Project

In addition to raffles and 50-50 drawings, cell phones and store coupons will be collected for the Wounded Warrior Project at Saturday's meet against Moravian Academy.

swim team will face on Saturday, Jan. 21. The meet will start at 10 a.m.

But members of the Blue Eagle swim team will be doing much more than showing off their talents in the pool.

They will be collecting donations -- and wearing blue camouflage -- for the Wounded Warrior Project. The purpose of the project is three-fold, according to www.woundedwarriorproject.org:

  • "To raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members.
  • "To help injured service members aid and assist each other.
  • "To provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members."

What Will Be Collected:

  • Used cell phones
  • Store coupons, which can be used by members of the military up to six months after expiration
  • Non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the

In addition to the above items, half of the proceeds made at the snack stand will be donated to the project, as well as money made from raffles and 50-50 drawings.

The swim team collects donations for a different charity each year. The Wounded Warrior Project was chosen to honor alumni and staff of Nazareth High who are currently serving or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces -- that includes Capt. Randall "Randy" Hall, a member of the U.S. Army.

Hall, who is a teacher at Nazareth High and part of the 728th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB), was recently deployed to the Middle East.

He spoke at , fondly remembering one of his friends, Army 1st Lt. Jeffrey F. Deprimo of Pittston, who was killed in Afghanistan. In May 2008, Deprimo was killed near the town of Ghazni along with two others when the vehicle they were traveling in encountered an improvised explosive device (IED).
