Nazareth Grad Named to All-Pennsylvania Academic Team

Stacy Beaty was selected for the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team because of her academic excellence and leadership.

Four Northampton Community College (NCC) students—including Nazareth alum Stacy Beaty—were honored in Harrisburg on Monday, April 8, as members of the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team.

They were selected from among students at community colleges across the state, based on academic excellence and leadership in a program co-sponsored by USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for students at two-year and junior colleges. To qualify for membership, inductees must have a 3.5 or higher grade point average, be enrolled in an associate's degree program, and perform community service work.

Before enrolling in the biological science program at NCC, Beaty trained at Second Helpings, a non-profit culinary school in Indianapolis, and worked in food service for five years.

At NCC, she founded the Vegetarian Club, initiated Meatless Mondays in the college cafeteria and participated in the student leadership class. In 2012, she presented "The Effect of Education and Stress Reduction Programs on Feelings of Control and Positive Lifestyle Changes in Cancer Patients and Survivors" at the Beacon Conference, a yearly event for community college students. She plans to pursue her master's degree in public health and work as a registered dietitian.

As part of NCC's service learning program, Beaty volunteered at the Cancer Support Community in Bethlehem and at St. Michael Indian School in St. Michael, Ariz. A handbook she wrote for the Cancer Support Community has been accepted by the Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community Based Research.

Beaty was recently featured on Nazareth Patch for being one of 181 student leaders from 36 states recognized as a 2013 Newman Civic Fellow.
