Moment of Silence Held for Student Christopher Hushour

Christopher Hushour, a Nazareth High School student from Bushkill Township, died this month.

The Nazareth Area School Board observed a moment of silence before Monday night's meeting for a student who died recently.

Schools Superintendent Victor Lesky said the student, Christopher Hushour of Bushkill Township, would have been a senior at Nazareth Area High School this year.

Lesky said Tuesday that Hushour's family did not share any details about his passing, but that a memorial service was held recently and that Hushour died a few weeks ago.

"Obviously, this being summer, it has less an impact on the day-to-day," the superintendent said. "But we informed his friends and gave them the opportunity to visit our student assistance program and meet with counselors."

In other business, the school board did two second readings on resolutions regarding students being able to carry and use asthma inhalers and requests for temporary excuses from school for homebound instruction.

The board could approve limited homebound excuses from attendance requirements if a physician or psychologist deems it necessary.

Parental consent would be required and the school district may offer tutoring during that period, the resolution states. The district would also require an assessment of the student's condition every 60 days.

The other resolution would allow students to possess asthma inhalers and epinephrine injectors and to be able to self-administer the prescribed medication.

A written request would be required from the parent/guardian that the school must comply with the physician, the resolution states. The school would also not be responsible for ensuring that the medication is taken. The student would also have to notify the school nurse once the medication is administered.

Students would be prohibited from sharing, giving or selling the medication, the resolution states.

Board action may be taken at the next meeting on Aug. 22
