Baseball All-Stars to Compete in Carpenter Cup

High School baseball all-stars from across the Lehigh Valley set to compete in annual Carpenter Cup Classic in Philadelphia.

Sixteen teams of high school baseball all-stars from the Tri-State area around Philadelphia -- including the Lehigh Valley -- begin competing today in the annual Carpenter Cup Classic at Ashburn Field in FDR Park in Philadelphia.

The Lehigh Valley high school all-stars are scheduled to play Mercer County, N.J., Monday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. for their first appearance in the single-elimination tournament.

The Lehigh Valley team won the 2011 tournament, defeating Burlington County, N.J., in the championship game at Citizens Bank Park. It was the third Carpenter Cup Lehigh Valley all-stars took home, having also won in 1998 and 2001.

As the tournament’s official Website explains, the Classic was developed in 1986 and named for former Phillies owners Bob and Ruly Carpenter. The Carpenter Cup Classic, which is recognized nationally as one of the finest baseball tournaments for high school students, is a vehicle to help promote the top area baseball players.

Each year more than 400 high school players from the tri-state area are able to showcase their skills in front of major league scouts and more than 220 college coaches. The Carpenter Cup has been a catalyst for many players to receive scholarships or admission to some of the country's finest universities.

Additionally, many Carpenter Cup participants have gone on to big league careers, including Mike Piazza, Ben Davis, Mike Koplove and Bobby Higginson.
