Will New Nazareth Pool Open Next Summer?

Debate begins on whether new pool could open sometime in 2014.

Why wait?

It was a question Nazareth Borough Councilwoman Cynthia Werner posed about the Nazareth Pool Committee announcing plans for the new pool and recommending an architect.

Councilman Chris Audenried, the pool committee chairman, told residents at council's Thursday night work session that a new pool grand opening would probably take place in 2015.

He said that pool construction would be completed by late next summer and that opening the pool for a month would not be a wise move.

"Can't you have a price so it can be done by 2014," Werner asked, stressing that the pool committee find out from an architect or pool builder about what fee increase it would take to expedite the project.

"Can't 2014 still be in the picture?" Werner wondered.

Audenried said "it's not impossible, but highly unlikely. We're going to have an alternative. You never know."

Council President Dan Chiavaroli also stressed that it would be difficult to find lifeguards and come up with pool passes for only a month.

Mayor Carl Strye Jr. also believed the winter might be a rough one, thus impacting the pool's construction.

The new pool would feature 50-meter lanes and two 25-meter lanes, would be 12-feet deep around a diving board, would have at least one and maybe a second baby pool and also maybe feature bubblers or sprinklers for children.

The pool committee began meeting in mid-June to come up with a pool plan.
