Traffic Light Coming to Route 191 and Friedenstahl Road?

Citing safety concerns, state Rep. Joe Emrick is pushing for a grant for a traffic light at what a news release referred to as one of the 'most dangerous' intersections in Northampton County.

Upper Nazareth Township has applied for a grant of more than $1 million to cover the costs of installing a traffic light at the Route 191-Friedenstahl
Road intersection in the township, according to a release posted on state Rep. Joe Emrick's website.

Emrick, citing safety concerns, made the announcement at a news conference this week. The release referred to the intersection as one of the "most dangerous" in Northampton County.

"This intersection has been the scene of too many traffic accidents and too many discussions dealing with how to address the problem,” Emrick said, according to the release. He said the grant application is "a big step forward" in getting the much-needed traffic light installed.

The intersection is near Nazareth Area Middle School. Officials have been hoping for years for a traffic light to be installed there.

If local officials are successful in the grant application, the money would be awarded through the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act’s Local Share Account, which consists of money generated by the Mount Airy Casino. Such funds can be distributed among the five counties adjacent to Monroe County.

"We’re hoping for good news in January, when the grant recipients will be announced,”  Emerick said, according to the release.
