Students Honored at Nazareth School Board Meeting

Nazareth Area High School students lauded for academic and service achievements.

It was the students' turn to shine at Monday's meeting of the Nazareth Area School Board.

The board and district administrators honored students for a mix of achievements -- academic and otherwise -- during the 2010-2011 school year and the summer just past. A full list of names was not immediately available.

The meeting room was nearly filled with students, parents and friends, in sharp contrast to recent board meetings that featured rows of empty chairs.

“It boggles my mind what this group of students is able to do on a regular basis,” said high school principal Alan Davis as six students who achieved recognition as A.P. Scholars stood before their parents and a few peers.

Davis noted that many of the students honored for high academic achievement also have jobs, participate in extracurricular activities and take an active role in their communities and places of worship.

One student -- who ironically was unable to attend Monday's meeting -- was honored for perfect attendance last school year. Another was recognized for working with disfigured children in Mongolia over the summer.

The specter of 9/11 was palpable. Davis showed a multimedia presentation on the events of Sept. 11, 2001 that was compiled and produced by Stephen Fishler, a senior.

No one spoke and few moved for the seven minutes or so the presentation ran. The sharply edited audio-video retrospective, culled from newscasts and other video shot on 9/11, was shown to Nazareth students on Sept. 9, the last school day before the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Davis said.

Fishler, 17, of Lower Nazareth Township downplayed the effort and skill it took to produce the video that mesmerized the audience on Monday. He said it took about 12 hours of work over the summer to compile the 9/11 presentation. Fishler, in brief remarks outside the meeting room, said he plans to pursue a career in television or radio journalism.

The Nazareth School Board meets at 7:30 p.m. the third and fourth Monday of each month in the Walter L. Peters board room.
