Lowered Speed Limits Possible for Newburg Road

The Lower Nazareth Board of Supervisors discuss the speed limit on Newburg Road, agree to contact PennDOT for a traffic study.

Motorists may have to hit the brakes on Newburg Road.

The agreed Wednesday night to look into lowering the road's speed limit, which is currently 45 to 50 mph depending on the stretch you're driving on.

Township manager Timm Tenges discussed a resident's letter to the township that asks for something to be done. The area between and Jordan Court, for instance, is one of the areas where the speed limit is higher, he said.

Do you think the speed limit is too high on Newburg Road? Tell us in the comment section below.

is also located on the road, just before the busy intersection with Route 191. To the west, the road eventually stretches all the way into Bath, where it turns into E. Main Street. Going east, it stretches to Route 248 / S. 25th Street in Palmer Township.

"We can request PennDOT to reduce the speed limit,” Tenges said.

Before the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation would agree to a change in speed, Tenges added, it would do a traffic study to determine what the speed limit should be.

“It sounds like a valid request,” said supervisors chairman Eric Nagle.

The supervisors agreed to move forward with contacting PennDOT about possibly lowering the road's speed limit.

The photo is just an illustration - apologies for the confusion. What the speed limit will be lowered to is still to be determined.

Considering most of the road is open farm land, 45-50mph seems reasonable. Anything less than 40mph would be unreasonable.

I am with Henry on this one... 45-50 is fine for that road. I can understand about the stretch in front of the school, but come one people. I already spend enough time in my car, I don't want to spend more.

Would love to see the entire stretch of Newburg Road lowered to 35 MPH. Why do all need to be in such a rush. Leave a little early and get there on time.

Yes it should be lowered or enforced, drivers fly out of Bath too fast and makes it hard to pull out at Township Line Road. It should be lowered to 25 MPH or 30 MPH coming out of Bath and not 45 MPH because drivers go faster than posted speed. It's like driving onto Highway 22 without a entrance ramp!
