Lowered Speed Limits Possible for Newburg Road

Motorists may have to hit the brakes on Newburg Road.

The agreed Wednesday night to look into lowering the road's speed limit, which is currently 45 to 50 mph depending on the stretch you're driving on.

Township manager Timm Tenges discussed a resident's letter to the township that asks for something to be done. The area between and Jordan Court, for instance, is one of the areas where the speed limit is higher, he said.

is also located on the road, just before the busy intersection with Route 191. To the west, the road eventually stretches all the way into Bath, where it turns into E. Main Street. Going east, it stretches to Route 248 / S. 25th Street in Palmer Township.

"We can request PennDOT to reduce the speed limit,” Tenges said.

Before the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation would agree to a change in speed, Tenges added, it would do a traffic study to determine what the speed limit should be.

“It sounds like a valid request,” said supervisors chairman Eric Nagle.

The supervisors agreed to move forward with contacting PennDOT about possibly lowering the road's speed limit.
