Nazareth's Proposed Budget Includes Half-Mill Property Tax Increase

The proposed budget will be available for public inspection for 10 days, beginning Nov. 15 at Borough Hall.

The proposed 2012 budget for the borough of Nazareth -- which includes a half-mill property tax increase -- will be available for public inspection for 10 days beginning Nov. 15 and ending Nov. 27. The budget can be viewed at , 134 S. Main St.

In addition to the proposed tax increase, the budget includes borrowing $150,000 -- over a five-year term -- and transferring $100,000 from the borough’s cash reserves.

The extra funding is required to finance:

  • A $325,000 stormwater project on Spring Street
  • A $310,000 replacement of the borough’s pool filtration system
  • A $20,000 pool upgrade so the borough is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act

The tax increase will be the borough’s second since 2004, when taxes were increased from 9.2 mills to 10.2 mills. In 2009, taxes increased by .8 mills for a total of 11.0 mills.

If approved, the new tax rate would be 11.5 mills and would mean a $25 annual increase for the average homeowner ($50,000 assessment).
