Nazareth Pool Won't Open for 2013 Season, Council President Says

The reasons for Nazareth Boro-Park pool staying closed during the 2013 season will be outlined during Nazareth Borough Council's workshop on May 2.

Ten days after Nazareth Borough Council approved the 2013 Nazareth Boro-Park pool rates, it was announced that the pool will not open for the 2013 season.

"I can confirm that the pool will not be opening this year," said Council President Dan Chiavaroli.

The pool was slated to open May 25 for the Memorial Day weekend.

Chiavaroli said a professional presentation outlining the reasons behind the pool's closure will be given during Council's May 2 workshop. The public is invited to attend.

The pool at Nazareth Boro-Park has been going through upgrades in recent months.

According to a 2012 newsletter, the borough was awarded a $139,860 grant to help offset the costs of a new filtration system. The state-of-the-art setup, the newsletter adds, would replace an outdated system and save the borough thousands in chemical costs.

A special lift was also installed to allow for safer and better swimming access for the disabled. This upgrade was mandated to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Chiavaroli said the nine-member Council is "very disappointed" by the latest development.

"We had conversations this week about some issues and we got some advice," Chiavaroli said. "We asked the person giving advice to create a presentation so it can be presented to the full Council."

Chiavaroli added that he does not foresee a big impact on the borough's summer recreation program or the YMCA's summer camp.

Nazareth Borough Council's workshop will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2.
