Nazareth Extends Police Chief's Contract

Chief Thomas Trachta can stay on the job until at least the end of the year.

The days of Nazareth Police Chief Thomas Trachta working on a month-to-month contract are over, at least for a little while.

Borough council voted Monday night to extend Trachta's contract—which had expired in December 2011—until the end of this year.

It's move Mayor Carl Strye Jr. hopes will mean a new beginning for the Nazareth police department.

"We're not looking in the rear-view mirror anymore," he said.

Strye said council will have new members at the start of 2014. At that point, they can work on a new contract for the chief.

Last month, Trachta asked council for a new contract, saying the lack of one made for an unstable situation with the department.

The borough is also looking to hire new full-time officers, as well as some part-time officers.

Councilman Jack Herbst said the borough will conduct interviews with candidates for the part-time positions Tuesday evening.
