Nazareth Borough Council Reviews Trash Hauler Bids

Borough engineer: If the numbers add up correctly, Waste Management will likely continue to be the borough's trash hauler.

Nazareth Borough Council reviewed bids from four trash haulers during Thursday night’s workshop, and Waste Management likely will continue to be the borough’s trash collector, the borough engineer said.

“It's likely [that Waste Management will be awarded the contract]," said borough engineer Aaron Sisler. "We’ll review the numbers to make sure all of the math is correct."

Waste Management came in with the lowest bid with $1,599,783 for a three-year contract. J.P. Mascaro & Sons, Interstate Waste Services of the Lehigh Valley and Raritan Valley Disposal also put in bids. All of the companies submitted bids for one-year, two-year and three-year contracts.

“Waste Management has the lowest bid, so I’ll take this to the Ecology meeting and go over it again,” said Councilman Charles Donello, who is also chairman of the committee. “We’ll award the bid at the October meeting if that’s OK.”

Council president Dan Chiavaroli explained to Donello that the borough prefers to keep the contracts at three years instead of five years.

“If you go with a five-year contract, you’re binding [new Council members] to something they didn’t vote on,” Chiavaroli said.

Chiavaroli added at the end of the meeting that Council members believe using one trash hauler is more economical than having residents choose their own hauler.

The bids are as follows:
