Weis Markets Worker Steals From Wegmans, Police Say

Court records say Maria Francas McDaniel, 46, of Bartonsville took $116.98 in food and household items from Wegmans in Lower Nazareth Township. She works at Weis Markets.

An employee of one supermarket chain is accused of stealing from another chain’s Lower Nazareth store.

Court records say Maria Francas McDaniel, 46, of Bartonsville in Monroe County took $116.98 in food and household items from the Wegmans at Routes 33 and 248 on the afternoon of March 8.

An information sheet in McDaniel’s file says she has worked at the Weis Markets store in Tannersville, also in Monroe, for 13 years.

The file does not include a probable cause affidavit, which lists evidence police gathered before filing charges. It does say that she allegedly concealed the Wegmans items in a brown cloth-style bag.

McDaniel was charged with retail theft and receiving stolen property. She was arraigned Wednesday afternoon by on-duty District Judge Roberts Hawke of Lehigh Township and released on $8,000 unsecured bail.

Meanwhile, online court records say McDaniel waived the charges at a preliminary hearing Thursday before District Judge Joseph Barner of Lower Nazareth.

Her file also says she was previously charged in connection with an alleged November 2012 retail theft in Monroe. The online records say the alleged offense occurred Nov. 12 and the charges were filed by Pocono Mountain Regional police.

She waived the charges at a preliminary hearing on Jan. 16.
