Wanted: Nazareth Part-Time Police Officers

The Nazareth Borough Council is seeking candidates interested in being part-time police officers.

Now that the Nazareth Borough Police Department will remain open for business, Mayor Carl Strye Jr. wants to spread the word.

"We heard part-timers don't want to come here because of our instability," the mayor said Thursday. "But we want to get the word out and attract them immediately. We're hoping for some seasoned officers."

Strye and the Police Committee discussed the hiring of part-time officers at Monday's meeting. Strye said he'd like to get two part-timers on board as soon as possible.

"I really hope the word gets out that we're staying," he said.

Councilman Jack Herbst, who chairs the police committee, informed residents that the borough has received nine applications for part-time officers.

Police Chief Thomas Trachta said, of those, three are in the police academy and will be graduating on June 28.

Trachta suggested that the borough keeps its advertisement for part-timers open so candidates can come in and apply at any time.

The borough has posted a Help Wanted notice for the post from Herbst.

It reads:

"The Borough of Nazareth is seeking qualified police officers for part-time employment with the Nazareth Police Department. Interested persons must be Act 120 certified. All previous applicants must submit new applications for consideration as all previously approved hires have been rescinded."

The advertisement asks candidates to apply in person at the borough office, 134 S. Main St. during business hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Anyone interested should call 610-759-0202.
