The Hero Next Door: Marc Suhr

Meet Marc Suhr, a lieutenant with Hecktown Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 and this week's 'Hero Next Door.'

Marc Suhr, 43, is a volunteer firefighter and a lieutenant with . He has been with the company for 11 years.

Suhr lives in and works for Swiss International Airlines as the regional manager for ground services.

He and his wife, Dawn, have three children -- Marc Jr., Joe and Kierstyn.

What is it like being a firefighter?

"My kids love it. Joe [Suhr's son] can't wait till he turns 16 so he can come here and start hanging out."

What made you decide to become a firefighter?

"Every little boy, I think, when they see that first fire truck wants to be a firefighter... I had friends [who were firefighters]. It's a hell of a lot of fun."

How do your loved ones feel about you putting your life on the line?

"The kids don't really understand it. My wife is more concerned about it -- that something is going to happen."

What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining the department?

"Come on down, try it out, see what it's like, and ask a heck of a lot of questions... You [have] one life to live, better live it to the fullest."
