Johnson, a police officer by day, has been with the company for 25 years -- ever since he joined as a junior firefighter at 16.

What is it like being a firefighter?

“I always say it’s cool when you go home and know that you helped somebody, no matter how minor or how big [the task].”

What made you decide to become a firefighter?

“I had friends that were running with the fire department at the time.”

How do your loved ones feel about you putting your life in danger?

“My girlfriend, I think she does worry, but she doesn’t tell me. She says, ‘I think it’s cool that you do something for someone you don’t know.’”

What would you tell people interested in joining Vigilance Hose?

“I would tell them you’re joining a brotherhood. It’s like getting a second family. It’s a lot of training. You have to be willing to train.”
