Smoky Fireplace Call Leads to Drug Gear Discovery

A Nazareth man created a smoky condition by burning the plastic stripping off copper wire in his borough apartment, which was filled with an assortment of drug paraphernalia that belonged to a second man.

Nazareth police and responded to the 100 block of Mauch Chunk Street Wednesday afternoon for a report of a dwelling fire.

The fire, police discovered, was actually a borough man burning plastic stripping off copper wire in the fireplace of an attic apartment, according to court records.

The building did not sustain any damage.

Police Chief Thomas Trachta said it was unclear if the copper wire was stolen.

Richard Jarman, 42, was also arraigned by Capobianco and charged with three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Daniel Troxell, the responding officer, observed -- in plain view -- a large amount of plastic and wax bags used to transport or hold heroin, according to court records. In addition to the bags, needles used to ingest heroin and a glass pipe used to ingest marijuana were also found.

Jarman admitted the drug paraphernalia was his, the court records say.

Croshaw is free on $5,000 unsecured bail. Jarman was sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of 10 percent of $2,500 bail.
