Police: Kids Attached to Dog Bought With Suspected Stolen Check

Their mother tells police she has accrued more than $500 in vet bills; she is charged with paying $2,000 for the dog with a stolen check.

Kim Summers, 31, of Stroudsburg still has the $2,000 English bulldog puppy "because her kids have gotten attached," according to Det. Gary Hammer of .

Summers is free on $5,000 unsecured bail, and has been charged with theft of property, access device fraud, theft by deception, receiving stolen property and forgery.

"I spoke to her [and told her that] it would be in her best interest to return the dog because it would mean less restitution," Hammer said in an e-mail to Patch.

Hammer added that he believes the dog will be returned to the Yuppy Puppy Pet Shop in Bartonsville in the near future. A manager was not available when Patch called Yuppy Puppy, but an unidentified employee did say the store would accept the dog if it were brought back.

According to Hammer, Colonial Regional Police did not seize the dog because the department is not equipped to hold animals.

Summers told police the dog was sick when she purchased it, and "she now has over $500 in vet bills," according to Hammer.

announced Tuesday that they arrested Summers for allegedly using stolen credit cards to purchase gas and cigarettes, and then a stolen check to purchase the dog.

According to police, a female senior citizen in a shopping cart at in Lower Nazareth Township. When she went back for it, the purse was gone, police say.

An unknown female -- later identified as Summers -- allegedly used one of the woman's credit cards to purchase gas and cigarettes at a gas station in Wind Gap, and then another credit card to purchase cigarettes from a gas station in Gilbert.

Summers then used a check found in the purse, according to police, to purchase the dog from the Yuppy Puppy Pet Shop.
