The Hero Next Door: Troy Keenhold

Meet Troy Keenhold, the chaplain for Vigilance Hose Co. No. 1 and this week's "Hero Next Door" on Nazareth Patch.

Troy Keenhold, 47, is the chaplain for and a member of the fire police.

Keenhold, a retired police officer, is the brother of Fire Chief and uncle to Second Assistant Fire Chief . He has been a firefighter for 12 years and a member of the fire police for two years.

As chaplain, what does your job require?

“I visit sick firefighters in the hospital, meet with families and preside over funerals and arrangements, when it’s necessary.”

How do the fire police differ from firefighters?

“We’re the ones that control the fire scene. We block off traffic, and we make sure people stay back and no one gets hurt.”

What is your favorite thing about being involved in the company?

“The community involvement... being able to assist our community.”

What made you decide to join?

“I was in the company when I was 17, and I was a firefighter for 12 years… then I came back to it [two years ago]. It’s been a family tradition.”

How did your family feel about you putting your life at risk?

“It was a positive response, actually. They’ve been through it with everybody.”

What would you tell someone thinking of joining the company?

“It’s a very worthwhile investment of your time. I would encourage everybody to try it. it’s very fulfilling.”
