An Easton woman has been charged with trying to walk out of the Walmart in Lower Nazareth with $484.66 in unpaid merchandise, police say.

Michelle Marie Thomas, 50, of 151 W. St. Joseph St., was taken into custody around 5 p.m. Monday.

A Walmart loss-prevention official told Colonial Regional police he saw Thomas placing merchandise in empty plastic Walmart bags in the middle of store. She tried to leave without paying, the official said.

Court records said Thomas does not have to pay any restitution and does not have prior retail theft convictions.

She was arraigned by on-duty District Judge James Narlesky of Hanover Township (Northampton County) on a charge of retail theft.

She was committed to Northampton County Prison after Wednesday night's arraignment but was released Tuesday after posting $7,500 bail, court records say.
