"Dark Knight" Shows Go On at Regal Despite Movie Massacre

Weekend patrons of 14 at Northampton Crossings shopping center are used to seeing a uniformed police officer at the theater.

The theater is patrolled by one officer from every Friday and Saturday night, according to Det. Sgt. Mike Melinsky. And that officer will likely be a welcome sight after a mass shooting at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" near Denver, Colo., early today.

Melinsky told Patch that police will step up their presence at Regal Cinema this weekend.

Regal has not announced any plans to curtail showings of the much-anticipated Batman blockbuster.

However, moviegoers should expect stricter controls over character attire and accessories at Regal theaters, according to Russ Nunley, vice president of marketing and communications.

In an e-mail to Patch, Nunley added that Regal's standing security policies remain unchanged, and staff "reserve the right to inspect the contents of any backpack, package or bag."

Nunley's e-mail also included a prepared statement from the Tennessee-based company:

"We are profoundly saddened by the tragedy that occurred at a Denver area theatre and are concerned for the victims and their families. The security and safety of our guests and staff is always our number one priority. As is our custom, we will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our security needs as necessary. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families."

Police say a 24-year-old man armed with an assault rifle, shotgun and two handguns killed 12 people and injured 59 others at a theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora. The gunman's motive is not yet known.

Showings of the "Dark Knight" will continue at Rave Movies at the Promenade in Center Valley, where a manager said before patrons enter the ticketing area.

Upper Saucon police will post two officers at Rave for tonight's shows, according to a Lehigh Valley Live report.

AMC Tilghman in South Whitehall is also showing the movie.
