Sinkholes Force Closure of Northwood Avenue, PennDOT Says

A water main break has been reported along Northwood Avenue in Palmer Township; PennDOT says sinkholes have formed in the area and the road has been shut down.

A water main break and sinkholes have been been reported along Northwood Avenue, according to the Palmer Police Department and PennDOT.

In a 3 p.m. announcement Thursday, PennDOT said Northwood Avenue is closed between Tatamy and Van Buren roads. Traffic is being detoured on
Tatamy Road, Park Avenue, Route 248 and Van Buren Road.

The closure is expected to last three-to-four days, PennDOT said.

The area affected is near the Northampton Crossings shopping center.

There were reports of low and dirty water around Palmer Township Thursday, but it was unknown whether that was connected to the water break.

One Palmer/Forks Facebook page commenter said there was no water near the Palmer Township library.

Another Facebook poster said she spoke to Easton Suburban Water Authority and was told not to turn on the hot water since sediments will travel to the water heater. She was also advised, after a couple of hours, to let cold water run for a few minutes until the water is clear.
