Giant Food Stores has recalled select varieties of Sunland peanut butter due to possible salmonella contamination.

Giant Food Stores has announced a recall of select types of Sunland peanut butter products due to possible salmonella contamination.

The following products, with "Use By" dates between May 1, 2013 and Sept. 24, 2013, are included in this recall:

  • Sunland Banana Peanut Butter Spread, UPC 04868760906, 16 oz.
  • Sunland Raspberry Peanut Butter Spread, UPC 04868761906, 16 oz.

The product should be thrown away or brought to any Giant. A full refund is available with a receipt of purchase.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses.

The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.

Salmonella infections can be life threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.
