Business of the Week: Victorian Salon & Day Spa

What's better than getting a deep-tissue massage? Getting a deep-tissue massage in a 112-year-old Victorian home.

Imagine you need to get your hair cut, or your nails done, or some waxing accomplished. What a hassle, right? Now, imagine you could get those pesky grooming services done in the cozy atmosphere of a century-old Victorian home.

While you wait for your appointment time to arrive, there’s smooth jazz or a classical tune playing softly in the background, and as you glance out a large window, there's an oak tree that’s probably twice your age -- if not more -- on a wide lawn.

Perhaps the spa’s slogan puts it best: “Pamper yourself in yesterday’s charm.”

Sound too good to be true? Not if you’ve ever been to the . True to its name, the spa is located inside a historic Victorian-style house at the corner of S. Broad and E. Prospect streets in downtown Nazareth.

Owner Katherine Biernat, an eight-year veteran of the cosmetology business, said her spa is just something she always wanted to do. “I felt like there was a need for a place where people [could] relax,” she said.

Biernat employs two stylists and a massage therapist, Tracey Johnson. Johnson has 12 years of experience as a licensed therapist, according to Biernat, who performs facials in addition to running the business.

“It’s more individualized… we’re not real big,” Biernat said, adding that she feels personalization is lost in chains and large retailers that offer similar services.

The spa's full menu of services, with prices, are available at www.victoriansalonspa.com.

Some of them include:

  • Cosmetology (haircut, color, perms, style and more)
  • Esthetics (facials, exfoliation and masks)
  • Massage Therapy (Swedish, deep-tissue and hot stone)
  • Waxing (lips, chin, hands, feet, knees and pretty much anywhere else you want hair gone)
  • Nails (manicure, pedicure, or both)

The local spa has been in business for four years, since the beginning of 2007. Clientele come from all over the Valley -- Easton, Allentown and Bethlehem, in addition to plenty of locals.

“We do a lot of cuts and colors for professional women,” Biernat said, adding, “Some men, too. Although not as many.”

Biernat is the fourth owner of the house, which was built in the late 1800s, and she has only done slight remodeling on the home -- she extended an enclosed side porch, which is now the main entrance and salon area.

The salon and spa’s hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The business is closed Wednesday and Sunday.

The Victorian Salon & Day Spa is located at 172 S. Broad St. in Nazareth. Services are by appointment only; no walk-ins are accepted.
