Business of the Week: Nazareth Floral Designs at Donahoe Farms

Established Nazareth business undergoes a name change.

How many times have you exited Route 33 in Stockertown and pointed your vehicle in the direction of Nazareth?

Chances are, your answer is: a countless number of times.

If you nodded your head in agreement to the above question and answer, chances are, you’ve also driven by Donahoe Farms on Route 191 in Upper Nazareth Township a countless number of times.

But have you ever made a detour and actually stepped inside the country gift store?

“Everyone that comes in here says they’ve been driving by for 18 years, [but] this is the first time they’ve been inside,” said owner Kevin Donahoe. “They’re always surprised by how big our store is and how much we offer.”

The owners of the 18-year-old business -- a husband-and-wife team -- reside in the authentic Moravian log home, built circa 1810, that stands beside the store at 589 East Lawn Road in Upper Nazareth Township.

In 2008, Kevin and Nancy Donahoe acquired  -- a Nazareth staple since 1916 -- from Les and Nancy Little.

With the acquisition of a second store, the Upper Nazareth location recently underwent a name change -- now known as Nazareth Floral Designs at Donahoe Farms -- in order to link the East Lawn Road and Main Street businesses.

OK, back to what Nazareth Floral Designs at Donahoe Farms has to offer:

Perhaps it’s Nancy's words that sum up the store best: “It’s a quaint shop for unique accessories -- handmade in America -- and [for] one-of-a-kind gifts… with a peaceful country atmosphere.”

Most items you may accidentally bump your elbows into are for sale -- everything from the garden décor to the jewelry, right down to the country furniture that holds smaller sale items.

The products, which are almost entirely handmade, come from all over America -- Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Massachusetts and North Carolina, just to name a few. Most of the jewelry, the unique wind chimes and the pottery are made by American craftsmen.

“We’re trying to get away from Chinese imports and get more into handmade gifts from America,” according to Kevin. “It hasn’t been an easy transition, but it’s been worth it.”

According to Nancy, Trollbeads have become a popular seller. Trollbeads are a line of customized beads from Denmark that are made from glass, silver or precious stones.  Each bead is inscribed with flowers or other sentimental designs symbolic of events, holidays and family.

On July 4, Nazareth Floral Designs at Donahoe Farms will proudly stock the American Trollbead, which is part of a line of country-themed beads currently being released.

All of that said, most people familiar with the Nazareth area know the Donahoes for their floral arrangements and herbs, which are either grown by the owners themselves or brought in from local growers.

Both Kevin and Nancy hold Bachelor of Science degrees in ornamental horticulture, which Kevin describes as the science of growing non-food plants.

Behind the shop, a greenhouse displays hanging baskets and plants. If you look beyond the greenhouse, there are four more acres of land on which to grow.

Nazareth Floral Designs at Donahoe Farms is located at 589 East Lawn Road in Upper Nazareth Township. The store is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store is closed Sundays.
