Cheap Trips: First Friday, Live Music and Trout

Three local attractions you can visit on one tank of gas.

Try one of these three trips you can enjoy on just one tank of gas: Manayunk First Friday in Philadelphia; Chaplin's, The Music Café in Spring City, and the Lil-Le-Hi Trout Nursery in Allentown.

1. Lil-Le-Hi Trout Nursery

Summary: The oldest continuously operated fish hatchery in the United States features volunteers from local sportsmen's clubs who raise thousands of trout each year to stock the Little Lehigh Creek and other streams in Allentown's extensive park system. Brook, brown, rainbow and golden trout from the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission arrive at the nursery as fingerlings and are raised to adulthood. Visitors can see pools housing fish in each stage of growth. Kids enjoy feeding the older fish. The adjoining park is open for picnics, hiking, biking and horseback riding.

2. Manayunk First Friday

Summary: Main Street Manayunk ushers in spring with a First Friday event for families, singles, couples and arts lovers. The monthly event will feature restaurant deals, paintings, happy hours, musical events, boutique sales and book readings. There's no cost to stroll Main Street, and take in whatever feature catches your eye.

3. Chaplin’s, The Music Café

  • Shows start at 8 p.m. unless another time is specified.
  • Doors open an hour before showtime.

Ongoing Events:

  • Chaplin’s Open Mic - every Sunday
  • Acoustic Bluegrass Jam - first Thursday of the month

Summary: If live music is your thing, then Chaplin’s, The Music Café is a place you must get to. Chaplin’s, The Music Café offers live music shows and is a true listening room with excellent acoustics. Originally built as a theater, music fans rave about the sound and its cool balcony as they listen to regional and national performers.
